View Full Version : What Game Have You Logged the MOST Hours With?

digitalpress
07-23-2002, 08:24 AM
topic revived from old forums

Imagine a stopwatch clicking on each time you play each game, and off each time you stop. Which game would have the most total time elapsed over the course of your life?

Whether it be a console, arcade, or handheld based game. What's been your LIFE'S greatest gaming time-killer?

Most of you here know mine. Phantasy Star Online, over 1000 hours. Even games from my youth that I still play, like Adventure on Atari 2600, come near even half of that number.

God, how pathetic is this? In complete and utter shame, I would probably have to say either Freecell or Minesweeper.

/me hangs his head in shame....

I think it was Adventure for the 2600.

But I must confess Frecell and Solitare are pretty darn close also.

The Street Fighter series as a whole has consumed more of my time than I would like to admit.

But as far as specific games go, I'd probably say:

Street Fighter Alpha II - arcade/saturn
Final Fantasy 2(4) - snes
Final Fantasy Tactics - psone

 Streetfighter2, Mortal Kombat2, and Tekken2

It's one of the following:
Shining Force series (if I can count them all as one, I've definitely logged more hours here than anywhere else)
Mega Man X (I play through it at least once every month)
Mario RPG (ditto)

Does it have to be a console game??

I've wasted more time with Diablo 2, Neverwinter Nights and Warcraft 3 collectively than any other game in my entire videogame playing career.

Well, expect for going out to the garage and playing Tempest while sporting a beer buzz.... oooohh.... the colors....

This is easy, the Quake series and it's many modifications...

Eric Dude
07-23-2002, 11:56 AM
Not quite sure, as it's a toss up between Master of Orion 2 and Gran Turismo. Probably Gran Turismo, sitting at ~8,000,000 Credits, ~1600 days, and 43 cars in the garage (every race beaten, natch). Yeah, it's gotta be GT.

Everquest - Over 3 years I played the game for a total of:

1 year and 36 days (or 9,624 Hours) played.

I think for me it's Super Mario World for SNES, though I can't put a number on how many hours I've played it. It's the one game that I never grow tired of, and I've played it pretty regularly since the SNES came out.

PSO is the one game I can put a number on. I put in over 600 hours on the game, and will probably put in a couple hundred more with either the GC or Xbox versions. So PSO may ultimately be my most played game.

For me it would be either F-Zero X or Zelda:OoT. I played both of these for about an hour every day for 2 years. I had to ge tevery skulltula on zelda, I have 99. Argh.

100th POST!

Ouu, I played PSO about 19 hours a day from Febuary, to July, no kidding. I have even been on bender's of 4-10 day's non stop. I think that I have 4 diffrent characters with at least 1000 hours at least on each.........

I must have spent nearly 4 solid months on the original Legend of Zelda when they first came out and I still play it quite a lot.

Ultima 5 for c64 got played on quite a lot. I don't know how many hours but I have 3 sets of backup copies that are beyond worn to prove it's been played on a lot. The original disks are in working shape and are kept under lock and keys. :D

But the all time record must go to Shanghai on various platforms.

Kid Fenris
07-23-2002, 04:12 PM
I put nearly 60 hours apiece into Final Fantasy VIII and Xenogears, but I probably spent well over 100 on Final Fantasy III (aka FFVI). I sometimes miss the days when U.S.-released console RPGs were so scarce that you could find the time to play through a 40-hour game more than once.

The sad ironic truth is.. as far as 'logged hours' goes, over the course of 3 or 5 years, I probably have spent more time w/ Street Fighter 2 on the snes than any game in my history of vids.

Well, for me, I would have no surpise saying Counter Strike. I put in a good solid 100 hours a month. Been playing for about 18 months, so almost 2000 hours :-P

Hmm...I did have to think of this for a bit. I am not quite sure to be perfectly honest. As far as the arcade goes, Galaga has taken up the most of my time. However, at home it is a much more difficult call. I would suppose it is either Ghost 'N Goblins or Super Mario Brothers, both on Nes.

Damn, asharru's intellivision guy moves! Shit I feel so inadequate...

But anyways, my list includes, Snood, Lunar 2, and Final fantasy VII (played it a few times through). But the grandaddy of them all was Star Control 1 for the Genisis. I played that thing for hours on end, day after day after day. Xcom comes in a close second. I just got masters of Orion 2, it scares me, it's like both of those two put together, and three look like it's more so...i am scared i may never come out of my apartment again, seriously.

I've definitely spent my fair amount of time on semi-modern games like Gran Turismo 2, and it feels like Shenmue took forever. But I'd probably have to go back to my aimless junior high school days and choose Autoduel and Below The Root for the Apple //. Both of them have huge and compelling worlds, and both of them are still replayable to this day.

Of course, if you count hours logged on a series of games, probably the Eamon adventures for Apple //...

My all-time king is probably Baseball Stars for NES, but a few more 8 hour nights twice a week playing multiplayer Halo & it'll be king.

That game just isn't getting old...

I'd have to say that various incarnations of Joust is my #1 time expenditure. I played it at the arcade, on 5200, then on PSX (Digital Eclipse discs).

#2 would be VF2 , mostly on Saturn, but lots in the arcade too. My VF2 Akira was pretty darn impressive.

#3 would be Street Fighter 2 incarnations, arcade , Genesis, and Saturn mostly.

Without a doubt it has to be Civilization in its many forms. I used to sit and play that on one of my high school teachers Macs for hours after school each day. In fact I think its right about time for a game of Civ III.....

Wow, and I thought my 250 hours on PSO was something. You have humbled me, DP. My most hours logged would have to be Super Castlevania 4, followed by PSO, and finally, Skate or Die 2: The search for Double Trouble. I've never gotten past the first stage in SoD2: I just spend hours on the half pipe. I think Thrasher: Skate and Destroy will sooon dethrone SoD2, since I fire that up frequently just to pull tricks on the half pipes in 3D.

This is too easy without a doubt Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) when it first came out I must of logged 1000's of hours of all nighters with my friends playing seasons. Since then I've played it at least once a week and always have a season going. It's by far my most played most often game I've ever owned. In a distant second might be River City Ransom (NES).

Don't know exactly. Possibilities? Doom II, maybe all the games in the X-Wing series taken together. Possibly Advance Wars. And maybe Steel Battalion & Line of Contact combined.

But you know, I did play a hell of a lot of Asteroids on the 2600.

For sure, the answer for me is NBA 2K1. At the time, I lived in a city away from home, wasn't old enough to go drinking and my girlfriend (now wife) was over an hour drive away. On top of that, I didn't get along with my roommates much, so I had a lot of time on my hands that I could've spent at the mall tempting myself to spend money I didn't have or playing my Dreamcast.

I had four games at the time -- NBA 2K1, Tony Hawk 2, Seaman and Rush 2049. I played an entire season of NBA 2K1 -- 82 games -- with 10 minute quarters and then did a full postseason to win the championship. I probably logged about 200 hours total.

I also have a lot of time on Super Mario 3 (NES), Tempest 2000 (Jag), and Earthbound (SNES), but I don't think it is nearly that much.

Where do you find a month to play anything, let alone one game? Never have kids, Joe. You'll never have marathons again.

I have a life. That being said, I've spent around 2000 hours at least playing Hunt and Score. That is, hunting at thrifts, fleas and garage sales. Oh, games? I must have put 100 hours into Ultima II for Apple 2. Maybe 60 hours into Champions of Norrath. I need to check, but probably 45 into GTA3. I am a game hours wuss. But I am not jealous of the Evercrack life donors.

Holy crap @ 1000 hours on PSO. That's a lot of time on that game. I've got 90+ hours on one character...all offline...can't really imagine spending nearly ten times that much!

My most-played game would be Counter-Strike. Played that for a number of years straight. Haven't touched it in half a year. Maybe someday. *shakes fist at AWPers*

That's a very interesting question...I guess that's why Joe makes the big bucks. For me, it's difficult since I've never really played RPGs...games that just suck your life away. I enjoy games you can have short sessions with so my #1 choice might be "Super Punch-Out" which I love going back to time and time again just to see if I can beat my times or to see if I can go through all 16 fighters at once without any of them laying a glove on me...that sort of thing. I know I spent a lot of time with Super Metroid when it first came out...I played till dawn the first time. I really enjoy baseball games, too, for some reason and my latest, MVP Baseball 2004, is probably my favorite now...I'm already nearly through my 2nd season...or is it my third? I'm not sure.

So if I could pick a top 3, it would probably go...

1. Super Punch-Out
2. Tempest 2000
3. Super Mario World

Well, I haven't had that baseball game long enough yet... :D

It's a damn close race between Counter Strike and Diablo 2. So many fucking hours of Diablo 2 at lans. So god awful many. Counterstrike I started at beta 3 and was so addicted. I loved everything about it. My favorite thing to do back in the days was set the bomb anywhere on the map when you were allowed to do that and use the gun on the tank in the iraq map after death. THE GHOST TURRET. LoL.

Gotta be Starflight. The combination of my slow-as-molasses Tandy 1000 and my inexperience with adventure games added up to lots of playing time back in the '80s. More recently, I lived in the game for a few months to write a 70-page guide to it. Good times. 8-)

I finally picked that game up (it had been lounging at the local thrift for a while without my knowing it was a game, due to the odd "box" format) a while back. Haven't tried it out as my Tandy is new, and is staying that way (need a used one - damn sealed games! LOL)

Anyhow. Awesome game right there. The Genesis version seems like a bad resource collection game with Star Trek references during the first day or so of play (if you play like me, aka "Chipmunk Oscuro") but picks up in a hurry afterwards.

There is nothing in the world that I would trade for being part of that game at that time in history. Yeah, but it all depends if he took his time, played for quite a while at the Gold Saucer, and maybe, just maybe, even got the supremely cool "Knights of the Round" summons.

First time I played it, bastard took me around 80 hours (using the Versus guide to do close to EVERYTHING you can do). Then the second time around 25 hours with a GameShark (mmmm, BEEFY).

Sadly Ultima Online since there is no end, I've been playing over 5 years. "Normal" game I'd say Ultima V on C128, I remember 13-14 hour stints til and beyond sunrise. Had huge notebook, they don't make games like that anymore, hand drawn maps, conversations with NPCs were typed in, no point and click, you had to figure out what to ask through trial and error (and clues picked up throughout the game) Turn based tactical combat. And non linear.

Most ever: Project Gotham Racing 2

For older games, I cant decide between:

Final Fantasy I on the NES - Took me a whole summer to beat it.

Contra on the NES - Me and a friend set out on a quest to beat it without dying on 1 player. We both eventually did it, but it took a LOT of practice.

Star Control on the Genesis - I still play this one a lot. If you get two people that are really good at the game, the sides become very equal. Hours and hours of fun in mele mode.

Totally agree with you man. I actually just re-quit early this year. I had been playing on again off again. This time I managed to get into the Best guild on our server. The number one has to be a tie between Diablo and Diablo 2 on the PC. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get my copy of Diablo 2 to work on my new XP based computer, so I haven't been able to play my personal video game crack for quite some time. Maybe it's for the best.

I get a black screen and silence upon trying to start it up after the install. :bad-words: Anyone have any suggestions!?!

On console, the number one has to be Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, followed closely by Radiant Silvergun. Both of them have very addictive experience systems that constantly reward you for perseverence.

Honorable mention: Rez for PS2 (can't get enough) and the original Legend of Zelda (with that one now on the GBA, I'm screwed!)

Games I've spend a large amount of time on:

Starcraft Brood War: Been playing since '98. Took a couple year break, but still going strong. Probably have a few thousand hours on it :\.

Marvel Vs Capcom 2: Between the DC and arcade versions, I probably have a thousand hours +

FFX: Hundred or so.

Super Mario 64: Used to play this game to death, and I still do
play it occasionally. I can beat the game in under 25 minutes now, using glitches of course. Probably a hundred or two hours total.

Seeing as how I played Final Fantasy 7 about 3 and a half times through I'd say that it tops the list. Most other games I've only played about one time through. I guess if I had to add up all the hours of FF7, it would be about 400 or 500 hours.

If I played online games like my Uncle, it would probubly be a ton more. He must log about 4-8 hours a day for as long as I've known him.

Phantasy Star Online hogs my time by a large margin.....nearly 6 years. I said "hogs" because I still play the original on Dreamcast offline. My mission is to find a legit Spread Needle and a Mag Cell, just to prove that it can be done. The original game is smaller and shorter so the chance of finding one might be better. I can hardly wait for the new game.

Gran Turismo 1, 2 and 3 got a lot of playtime too.

Halo
RE4

in order of total hours played:

#1. Streetfighter 2 and SF2 turbo on SNES 100s of hours put into these games back in 92-94.

#2. The original Legend of Zelda on NES also well into the 100s of hours put in on this one single game and its still my favorite game overall.

#3. Silent Hill series

also: Dayeeeetona! and Streetfighter Alpha 2 on Saturn, RTS games on PC command and conquer and Starcraft.

Arcade: Mortal Kombat 2 and Killer Instinct.

Unreal Tournament on the PC

All day everyday. That's pretty much how I'd describe my playing habits with that game. At least 8 hours a day. It was nice not having a job for a while ;)

The Gold boxes from SSI on C-64. It was like 'Just one more look around THAT corner', whoops, it's 3am in the morning. Just couldn't stop playing these (And of course, they got better and better with their later series, had me up even longer)

Millenium 2.2 (or something like that) had me up all night, and Battletech Cresent Hawk Inception on C-64 as well, Ultima III Exodus and Wizards Crown on Atari XL also taken many of my nights, when I should be having sex.

All the above are excellent games.

PSO it was a all most a 24 hours a day thing for me.

Still i doubt... that will happen to me again on PSU.

I'm not in the mood for more sleepless nights again :embarrassed:

I'm there with ya. ;) Well over 1000 hours on the GC version of PSO.

The original game is smaller and shorter so the chance of finding one might be better.

Right, but aren't the drop rates lower? Also, I seem to recall rares not coming out in quests, which have higher enemy counts. It's been a while though.

wow. this is a tougher call than i thought, but it would come down to SMB3, Contra, or Tecmo Superbowl for the NES. :D

It's either Wario Woods, Final Fantasy 7, or Advance Wars Dual Strike. All these games are insanely addictive for me!

Way back when it was the 2600 VCS version of Crystal Castles. I even got all the way though (the last castle is all skeletons & ghosts!)

More recently it's Diablo (PS)- I've played thru it many times using all 3 characters. They're all around lvl 30+. I just cant/wont/dont get tired of that game.

Same w/ Champions of Norrath: RoE (PS2). I've got one finished game save for each of the 5 characters right now- the file's around 2.5 MB! Even though the basic quests are always the same, I dont get sick of it.

I found a Spread Needle offline in the big room in Ruins 2 (version 1), Yellowboze. Dunno about the mag cell though. Good luck, hopefully you don't mind that you know now.

Absolutely, without a doubt, Ultima Online...or maybe EverQuest :)

More recently, EverQuest 2.

Before I quit EverQuest 1, I believe my played time was something in the area of 100+ days (like 2000-3000 hours). Maybe more - I don't remember.

EverQuest 2 has been the latest, but that's more in the area of a few hundred hours. I find that with a fiancee, full time job, and small business on the side, gaming of any type has been put on a back-burner. If only I could play games at work...then I'd be set... 8-)

I cant remember if I ever posted in this thread. Too lazy to search the pages.

I would have to say 3 games:
Super Mario Bros 1
Super Mario Bros 3
Halo

Monster Farm wins in my case: I've spent many nights making monsters from every CD I could find. And then there's the training, battling and exploring...

I've played my fair share of Goemon games - they just aren't that deep and I tend to beat them fairly quickly. Although Goemon 64 has some backtracking and exploring if I remember correctly. That one took me a while, especially that #@$*& "fall off the back of the dragon" stage.

I would either say Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. Those are just guesses, but the both have a long life because you can keep playing GTA after you beat it, and Gauntlet is just so damn long :)

It may be Super Mario Brothers 3 also, since that was the first video game I played and I still play it.

Interesting topic though

Phantasy Star Online easily (especially the DC version, though I put another 100 or so hours in the cube). Mostly offline.

The game that I could never keep my hands off of would be Resident Evil Four. I beat that game twice and continue to play it. Once I got done with everything, I used my Action Replay to make me invincible and give me unlimited ammo. I just go berzerk on the merceneries mode. I can do that for a good while.

I am unsure how many hours I put into the entire game.

If I had to guess, it would either be Final Fantasy XI (which I no longer play, but I had put in about 1800 hours or so before I quit), or Angband.

Seriously, Angband (and all of the different variants) are like gaming crack to me. I have a XBox 360 sitting practically unused, waiting for me to finish 'just one more run' with my Dwarven priest. ;)

Because they take so long to play:
Goonies II, Pirates and Dragon Warrior from the NES

Because they are so fun:
Probably the Street Fighter 2 games, the Mario titles or the Zelda games.

The Legend of Zelda and Mario Games I can play for like forever and not get tired from them as for hours go I been playing them since I was a little kid till now so i don't know what the total is. Final Fantasy 7 is another one that I can play over again with over 200 hours+ logged into to it.

#1 - PSO GC - 320 hours and counting :eek 2:

#2 - Pokemon Crystal - 215 hours at last check

#3 - Super Smash Bros. Melee - 180 hours

Tetris may be up there somewhere over a variety of platforms as well... I know I've sunk in a good amount of time over the years on the GB and NES versions, plus I picked up the DS version last weekend.

Street Fighter Series with out a shadow of a doubt, its just that damn good!

Then 2nd would probably be as silly as it sounds Counter Strike: Source,
its just one of thoose games that you can play for 5 minutes
onlie with some friends only to become aware it was actually
two hours! @_@

7 hours a day. 3 months. Phantasy Star Online.

I couldn't even access the online feature of this game yet it's addictive powers had a hold on me like no other game has. The lure of another level or a rare item drop had me on the edge of my seat, and kept me enthralled.

I would say Panzer General, MS DOS version.
All the user made scenarios and campaigns and other mods out there are keeping this great game fresh as celery.
