View Full Version : What Is Your Own Personal Holy Grail?

Every system has a Holy Grail usually based on rarity. The chapionship carts for Nintendo. The Half Life proto / loaner for the Dreamcast.

What I would like to know is what is your personal Holy Grail? What game would you like to own that you don't already? It can be based on rarity or just the fact that you really enjoy the game.

Mine would be Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Saturn. I had parts 1 and 2 a few years back and thought they were great games even though I didn't get to finish them.

My holy grail for now, are two pieces of hardware for the NES

1- The "NES Joystick Testing Box" that was used in the service center bakc in the day to test the joysticks on the NES.

I know the testing cart for this exist (it's in the DP Guide) but this piece of hardware must be ver hard ton find.

2- The "Hotseat Game Chair" (also in the DP Guide) if anybody apart me own this let me know. I seem i'm the only one right now who have this !

I know it's not that hard to find, but I'm cheap and I don't want to pay the asking prices. But, I've always wanted Tengen Tetris for NES, and the day I find it at the thrift store/flea market/garbage whatever, I'll be on Cloud 9 for weeks. :)

I even have the game on 2 of my 3 famicom pirate carts, but I want the actual cart. LOVE that game, best version of Tetris I've ever played.

StarFox Super Weekend more than Donkey Kong Competition but both will we pretty equally expensive to obtain. By the time I get both of these, I will probubly be done with collecting SNES games.

Also, Star Castle complete for Vectrex. Another expensive one but not as expensive as the other 2. And Polar Rescue complete, another expensive one.

i'm seriously going for gold here.

Hrmmm, I'd have to say my holy grail would have to be every game treasure has developed in the box, along with Japanese imports on ones where the language/story isn't as important. Number one on that list is currently Ikaruga. Right now, I have Gunstar Heroes and Gunstar Heroes (Game Gear). Although my genny copy isn't boxed....

Ninja Gaiden Trilogy - SNES
Gunstar Heroes - Genesis
Ninja Gaiden III - NES

Why is Ninja Gaiden Trilogy selling for $90 on Amazon.com? Why is Ninja Gaiden III selling for $30 on Amazon.com? Those were common games back in the day. In fact, my sister and I received Ninja Gaiden III one Christmas. I liked the first two much better.

My wants vary depending on such variables as time, what I've been playing lately, ambient temperature, and what I had for lunch, but right now I think the prize goes to a boxed copy of Castlevania Dracula X for SNES. It's the only Castlevania game I haven't beaten.

A close second would be Suikoden I and II.

Ok i have been wanting to ask this for awhile as a collector i want to know what you would consider your holy grail, what is the one game, console or item that your collection needs or has it dosnt have to be rare just that one thing you must have or already have
for me it has to be a mint condition 100% complete copy of legend of zelda link to the past i had one but it was stolen when those nice people came and cleaned me out about 12 months ago, i have a colpy of it now but its not 100% complete and its far from mint.
so lets hear it ladies and gents im curious to hear what you have to say and who knows maybe we could find some of these gems

I'd have to go with my original release of Diddy Kong Racing for the N64. I received it as a late Christmas gift in January 1998 (Just a week after New Year's Day), and while it may not be in not that great of shape, it has remained the single most important part of my collection due to how many childhood memories it brings back whenever I play it.

I think the rarest item in my collection is my copy of FFVII. It may be a Greatest Hits copy, but it has this misprint on the inside labels with Sephiroth on both sides. Which I think is rarer then a regular GH copy. Though any good complete copy could fetch some good amounts.

Also of note is my gold cartridge of LOZ: Ocarina of Time and black label edition of Castlevania Symphony of the Night. While these aren't very rare (though I could be wrong) they're very cool in my opinon.

"I'm sure my copy of the GameStop collectors edition of FFXII will be worth something in about 20 years."

I think that the 'Holy Grail' of my collection would have to been the Magnavox Odyssey 2, which I have the box to with the original receipt from where my father bought it in 1981.

The 'Holy Grail' which I don't have, though, would have to be the original Magnavox Odyssey. I would love to find one of those for a decent price.

Right now there's a couple arcade games I've been having some trouble hunting down, namely the JPN release of Sorcer Striker, Kiki Kaikai (knight boy), etc.

I'm starting to regret not having paid what I thought was an extortionate price for Ninja Emaki when I found a copy; I think I might as well eat crow and buy it at the asking price because this game NEVER seems to show up.

Recently, a short-term "grail" was a complete JPN copy of the second Kiki Kaikai on Super Famicom, that showed up for $60, counting a second game in the auction as free. Good deal.

My holy grail would be an original Donkey Kong arcade machine in good condition.

Too bad that I can't afford one, and also don't have the space for it right now. (My "new" [that is, new-to-me], currently-in-restoration Neo-Geo MVS takes up the last bit of space in my room).

I know it's not really a video game, but I'd love to have a Star Trek:TNG pinball machine. I've wanted one of those ever since I first played it years ago.

If I had to pick a real video game, I'd say I want a Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom arcade machine. My friends and I would play that game constantly at the arcades. That and Virtua Fighter 2. I know none of these games are very rare, but I'd much rather have one of them than some ultra rare game cart that I'd never play.

I ran across a Crash n' the Boys Ice Challenge proto before I got into serious collecting and found out what it was. I passed up on it, and have been kicking myself for not getting it ever since I found out what I missed out on. The ONLY proto I ever came across. I hope one day I can get another shot at it, since things tend to stay in circulation in the flea market circles...but probably not.

Also I have fond memories of playing The New Zealand Story on an arcade cabinet at a local mom and pop pizzaria when I was a kid. I'd like to eventually get a cabinet when I have the money and space for it.

Personally, my 'holy grail' changes every few months. I set out to find a certain game at a certain price locally and stick to it. Usually the games are next to impossible to find here despite the fact that they are widely available on the internet. Current titles are:

Pilotwings 64 (less than $10)
NHL 94 Sega CD (less than $7)

Strangely, these games are impossible to find locally at any price but seem to be dirt-common on the intertubes, so if I get desperate I'll pony up the 99c ;)

My Holy Grail used to be something I always coveted but had never even seen before. It was a Milton Bradley eXpansion System for the TI-99/4A. There were several games made to be played with the MBX, but I never saw the actual system outside of catalog photos. It was a voice recognition/synthesis module with an external keypad and a space-age analog joystick. I've read some statements from people who think as few as 300 MBX units were ever made, since it was put out right around the time TI discontinued the 99/4A.

One day I was checking out the local flea market and the collector guy's booth at the back of the place, and I did a double-take when I saw the MBX, boxed and complete. I took it to the seller's register, and he smiled and said "I was wondering how long it would take for someone to realize it was on the shelf". He charged me $40 for it, then said "you realize you're getting a fantastic bargain?" Oh yes, I knew it.

The thing is, I still have yet to try it out. I wanted one since 1983, and now that I have one, I don't want to play it and be disappointed that I wasted so many years wanting it. It's like when I bought a boxed Bally Astrocade and read up on it, with it's high failure rate after all these years, so I put it on a shelf and never played it because I wanted to believe I paid $40 for a working console and I didn't want to know if it was dead on arrival. Eventually, I broke down and played it (it worked). I'll do the same one day with the MBX.

My holy grail used to be Sin and Punishment for the N64. Fortunately I got a complete one here from a user (thanks monthly finds thread!). Still haven't played it though. Damn you 360...

Well if the gameplay's anything like the Virtual Boy's version, then you aren't missing much. Although I'll take polygonal 3D graphics on a 2D TV set over the Virtual Boy's real 3D anyday.

I should mention that for a while on #cv (IRC channel I ought to visit more) there was a bit of a running joke between me and a German user about how Rendering Ranger was a grail for me. Next time I see him (I hope) I'll be able to say..."been there, done it - twice!"

Next stop...Psychic Killer Taromaru probably (GaijinPunch once had a shot at some original artwork for the game but couldn't get it, which he regrets - I know the feeling).

I also have had some "close calls" lately with stuff I'd like to get, but something usually intervenes (and not always my doing)!

Sin & Punishment...I don't know how but I managed to get three copies of this. Okay, it went like this: First one bought, didn't really care for the condition (probably being too picky), got another (don't know if it was any better hah) and a third came along with a JP N64 recently-ish. All boxed & complete.

Right now my "holy grails" aren't even gaming related though: the newly-released Canon TS-E lenses are pretty expensive but worth it, and hold their value pretty well too. Apparently the new 24mm one is just as sharp as Canon's regular 24mm lenses, which is amazing :D Barring that, a tilt-shift lens & medium format camera would be...good...but not a little bit expensive (just the camera system and a basic lens would be more than my entire game collection is worth, without a doubt).

My boxed Twin Famicom.

Let me give a quick story:

I was a BIG Nintendo mark(still am) and this was one of those things that always escaped me. I've always wanted one of these because it was not only a combo deal of two systems I've always wanted, but it was also a work of art in my opinion.

I FINALLY got one on eBay for $190. But, long story short, the aggravation that went along with it(non responsive, deceitful seller, fight to get him to even send a part, the hours upon hours of cleaning it and fixing it) was what made it even more definitive.

You see, a few years ago, I lost the woman I was going to marry to a car crash. She was a BIGGER mark than I was when it came to classic games. She's wanted one of these more than me, as she was big on rarities and obscurities(this is the SAME woman who actually OWNED an N-Gage at launch).

So, like out of a storybook, at the point where it seemed hopeless, there was a sort of divine intervention. The belt finally arrived after all the aggravation. After all the hours I put into fixing this unit, it STILL didn't work, even with the belt, even after turning the heads, and EVERYTHING.

As I was putting it back together, ready to ship it back, I was heart broken. After all, I finally got my hands on something I really wanted most of my life and spend countless hours on it and now it's gone again.

But, as it was put back together, a voice inside me told me to give it another shot. I figured I had nothing to lose and popped Zelda in again. To my amazement and shock, IT WORKED!

I've been playing it ever since and I do believe that on that day, Rachel was truly my angel. So, the Twin Famicom isn't really a holy grail because of the rarity, it's because of what it meant to her and what it means to me.

Ooh forgot about the 3DO Blaster.

I remember many years ago seeing an exercise controller at the Nordic Trac kiosk at the mall, but it was not the one that uses an actual Nordic Trac machine. You sat with your legs stretched outward and pushed against a plate at your feet to move your set upward and into the middle; this would be your dpad. It was available for SNES and made it hurt (even more) to play StarFox, but it looked so friggin cool.

How about some protos of those unreleased Power Glove games while we're at it. Does anyone even have these?

Of course Port's will differ from mine - we've got so much stuff that is monetarily a grail that we are proud of, but for me the sentimental stuff is way easier to choose!

Back when we were dating, he found someone that was making custom plushies, some of them FFXI models. He had gotten me a larger one, which is very nice and in some of the early level gear. The second one, he gave me on one of our dating anniversaries, I awoke to find a small Taru red mage looking down at me. The first one won't fit in our display case, but my little red mage sits proudly between my Elvaan cold cast and the Shadow Lord.

My other personal grail is my sealed copy of Castle of Illusion for the SMS. I had played that when I was young and knew the name of it but was never sure what console it was for. Obviously it wasn't the GG version, although that was fun too. Working at Funcoland for 5 years, I finally came across a copy for Genesis. I was so excited to pop it in only to find... it was the wrong one!

Eventually I found my way to NYC and into a game store that had a SMS copy tucked deep in their back room. I figured this was it - I would finally get the game! And then they brought it up, much to my horror it was still sealed. I thought it was a crime to rip the shrinkwrap off a game that had manage to stay pristine for over 15 years. Of course they came up on eBay periodically, but I wasn't going to spend the money for a complete copy when I had a perfectly good sealed one. So, Port came to the rescue again and now I have a loose copy I can play whenever I so choose.

As far as software goes, the item I have that I see available the least often is Ys for PC-88.

My Black Tiger cocktail arcade is priceless to me, closely followed by my SFIICE dedicated Capcom cabinet and I fulfilled a third long held wish by obtaining my very own sit-down Daytona USA arcade.

My PC Engine Tattoo cost more than my boxed Duo RX and will last much longer.

My holy grail would have to be Daytona USA:CCE Netlink Edition for the Saturn.

I actually found it at a thrift store a while back for $1 along with several other Saturn games. I had no idea it was the netlink edition (or that a netlink version even existed) because the case is no different from the normal version. I almost left it behind because I knew I already had a copy of Daytona USA:CCE and only picked it up because my copy was disc only. When I got it home I saw the additional black and white netlink booklet inside and the "Netlink" notation on the disc but still had no idea it was so collectible. Not until I stumbled across a thread on here discussing it did I know what I had.

Sadly, I didn't find it, but my holy grail showed up this year (or last? recently anyway). That is Gammation "Gamma Attack". I saw the original ads, but NO ONE else remembered them, and no one, until a few months back, had ever found one. Even I was convinced that it just plain never happened, then it showed up. Yow. Of course, it came with drama, and who knows the whole story, but there it went, my holy grail.

I have two grails in my possession at the moment.

I love my Atari 5200 so to stumble across a great condition CIB copy of Meteorites was a spectacular moment for me. Not only being so rare, but to be discovered in one of my least favorite game stores that usually has everything over priced their flat rate on Atari games saved the day! They had a box that looked to have been bought off eBay filled with Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, Intellivision, ColecoVision, and even some Commodore stuff. It was a real mixed bag of goodies, but I had limited will and generally don't spend more than $20 in one place within a single visit unless something impressive exceeds that value. I ended up buying 5 CIB Atari games at $5 a pop, which included Meteorites and some other good classics. Although I wasn't actively seeking it out it became an instant gem and grail since one day I'd like to have a complete CIB 5200 collection of commercial/market releases.

The other grail I have is the Robotron 2084 arcade machine. I don't know why exactly I've been so attracted to this game as I'm not super good at it, it frustrates the hell out of me, there are plenty of little glitches, but damn is it fun and addictive. I first played it on emulation through the Midway Treasures on the GameCube years ago which kicked lots of ass due to the dual analog sticks. I had seen it in action before, but never had a chance to personally play it. So when I got into 5200 collecting I stumbled across a copy just over 2 years ago, but it was lacking with low frame rates and difficulty of game play without original stock controllers being coupled together with a mold, instead two loose set Wico sticks being balanced on each knee while attempting to play. Then at an auction in Richmond that December I had a chance to see and play in full arcade glory, the major set back was a price tag of $1200!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c196/cyberfluxor/pic5.jpg
So zip ahead to last Spring and on Craigslist someone towards the beach had a listing of a Robotron 2084 cab for well under $500, which to me was a great price if in nice working condition without cosmetic work needed. It had a few scratches, dings, and damage on the footing but overall a wonderful machine! After paying for delivery and replacing some stuff like the lamp, ballast, some screws, rewiring some stuff, and so forth it came to just under $500 still. I may recap the monitor in the near future so that'll cause the machine to just tap over that bar, which has been totally worth it.

I have two Holy Grails:

1. The unreleased prototype of Madden 96' for Sony Playstation. I'd just like to play it to see how horrible it was. I was really looking forward to the game as it was supposed to come out near the launch of the PS1, but the game got yanked at the last minute. There was an issue of Next-Generation magazine that had Madden 96 on the cover, and they did a story about the PS1 version. It was supposed to come out, and it was pretty shocking that it never made it. Visual Concepts was pulled off the project, and then EA handed it over to Tiberon. Of course, Visual Concepts would later go work for Sega, and became one of their key developers for Sega Sports starting the whole NFL2K and NBA2K series on the Dreamcast. I've heard there is a playable version of Madden 96 floating around somewhere on a CD-R. I don't know if the game would play on a regular modded PS1, or if you'd need a special development kit, but I'd love to see it in action.

2. First Issue of Die Hard GameFan - I've been collecting GameFan issues for awhile now, and I think I'm only missing like 2 or 3 issues. I don't have the first issue, and I see it pop up on Ebay every now and then, but I just don't have the stomach to pay $150 for the damn thing. I'd be willing to pay like $75 or so for it, but I doubt I'll ever find it on Ebay for less than $125. Oh well, I guess it gives me something to still be searching for. If I bought it for $150, and had it in my collection, then it wouldn't be something I was always on the hunt for.

As for what I own, I'd have to say either my complete Earthbound for SNES or my complete Final Fantasy for NES.

My biggest want has to be the tournament cartridge from the Nintendo Power Fest. The one that you had to get 50 coins in Super Mario Brothers, complete a race in Rad Racer, and get 4 Tetrises (is that a word?) in Tetris (duh). They took the people that had the best times and they got to play Super Mario Brothers 3 before it came out.

Before Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout was re-released on Playstation in 2004, the original version was quite rare and being a Dragon Ball Z fan in the early 2000s, I really wanted the rare US version. I couldn't find it anywhere and didn't have ebay back then.

Instead, I found an imported copy of DBZ: Ultimate Battle 22 being told they didn't have plans to re-release it here. A couple years later in 2003 they did. Paid $30 for the import and $20 for the swap disc. Then I paid $20 for the US version and saw that the pre-battle animations were cut out so it wasn't that bad that I bought the import. The next year I got the re-release of DBGT: Final Bout and was like "well I'm glad I didn't buy it for $100 off ebay" but I still had fun leveling up a character 99 times.

Now my holy grail would be Sonic Blast for Sega Master System. It probably got a low production run, I never saw it on ebay any time I looked, and generally auctions coming from South America cost tons of money to ship even if the item is small. I saw an auction for Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine for SMS and it was freakin' $100 + $40 shipping or something crazy like that. I was like hell no, I'm not buying that for such a price. I hope they never sold it and realized they were being dumb.

my holy grail is somewhat related to yours. i have a small book called "Dracula X: nocturne of night art book." i got this little book when i preordered SOTN on PSone. it is still in mint condition. i kept it tucked away in Mic Foley's "Have a Nice Day" book for many years. it wasnt until this year i realized ive had it this whole time.

this is the only information i can find about it

Same with me, although it's more of my brother's than mine - I'm fine with just importing the Super Famicom cart, which is much easier to find and heavens cheaper.

My personal grails are actually easily obtainable due to Yahoo Japan and SMJ - it just depends on how much money I'll have during a particular time! A white Japanese Saturn, an AV Famicom, various weird SNES/SFC accessories, etc.

My favorite game of all time also happens to be faily rare in general(Dragon Warrior 3 for the NES), but I would love to get a still factory sealed one(I would like to get my hands on the Prototype, but that's so not gonna happen, but The factory Sealed one would "look" better as a display piece anyway).

PS. Has anyone ever seen one of the Prototypes of Dragon Warrior 3 even hit the market(I'm sure if they are still in existance, they're probally in some private collection somewhere, never to see the light of day, but still, doesn't hurt to ask)?

You can find one copy on Ebay right now for $119. The only other copy you'll see on completed listings is the one I purchased from someone I know on another forum for $75 shipped. This is a rare import, too. You can find the more expensive Rondo of Blood on Ebay more frequent than this game. Which is an amazing game but also more of a well known game.

It's not my favorite game as still Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together, Arc the Lad 2, and Brigandine Legend of Forsena are right above it. But it's easily one of my favorites and I've wanted to own it for such a long time.

Disc 2 is in perfect condition. Disc 1 has some light scratches. Everything with it.

My Holy Grail changes constantly, but one that comes to mind and continues to be is 'Ico' for PS2.

I can't seem to find one at the right price, so it still remains slightly out of reach.

I've just finished collecting all the Final Fantasy games I wanted (started at the PS1). I have 7,8,9,X,X-2,12, and 13. I also have a copy of the online 11 version for Xbox 360, but I don't have the 360 any longer so its just there to fill out the set.

One goal that is consuming me lately is to own every single RPG ever produced for the Playstation 3. I'm almost caught up!

My goal is to complete the entire set by the end of the Playstation 3 lifecycle. Getting every PS3 title is not my goal - that would be very difficult, but if I can obtain every RPG, I think i've covered more of the rare games. I'll probably hold onto them for a long while, complete as many as I can, and then sell the entire lot for a gazillion dollars! :vamp:

Just missing Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Last Remnant, Enchanted Arms, Rise of the Argonauts and White Knight Chronicles. Picked up Untold Legends for 12 bucks Canadian this week (really proud of that deal), so i'm getting close!

Super Castlevania IV. Not a least bit rare on average, but in my own experience it beats even ICO. It's the sole copy of the game I have ever encountered offline.

Right now, I'm working on collecting Sega stuff to get up to speed. I spent a lot of years only playing Nintendo stuff. Here's what my current "grails" are:

Master System model 1: This item always eludes me. Either it's up for a crazy price, or it sells before I even get the chance.

Dreamcast sports edition: Not rare either. I initially didn't want it because of the Sega Sports logo, but then I realized that Sega Sports made some awesome racing games.

Pokemon Box memory card 59: As you might know, Pokemon Box is one of the rarest Gamecube games. I just found a copy two weeks ago that had the game case and everything in it EXCEPT for the memory card. It even had the memory card stickers in it, dangit! It's a pretty danged sweet looking card, too!

As the questions states: what is the prized game of your collection?

It actually doesn't have to be a game. I've seen some awesome AES controllers that friends pride their collection on.

But for me, it has to be my Chrono Trigger, with box, inserts and strategy guide, mint. I just think that game did so much for the industry. From being the first to introduce multiple endings in an RPG to the art (the artist went on to create Dragon Ball).

I have a lot of games, but if I were going to show one of em' off, it would def be that one.

Post below! I'll post pic soon!

The artist did Dragon Ball way before he did those RPG's (Dragon Ball came out in like the mid 1980's). As for prized gaming item in my collection it'd probably be my PC Engine Duo-R.

I actually would have said this too, but I pulled the cart out of it for a christmas gift (gotta spread the joy of Crystalis) and haven't gotten the cart again since then.

After thinking about it, I realize that while there's lots of stuff in my collection, I can't say any of it is exactly "prized." There's a few things I won't sell, mostly b/c they are cheap and have some sentimental value (like the Chrono Cross I won in a review writing contest), but nothing that I would be heartbroken without. It's all just games and as much as I love em they aren't as important to me as family and friends and things like that. I guess since I've given up my collection in the past, I just don't grow that kind of attachment to anything.

Out of sentimental value, I'd have to say Megaman Legends for the psx. I will always love that game no matter how many times I play it. Easily ranks in my top 5 or 10.

Out of monetary value...that's an interesting question. Most of my individual games aren't worth huge amounts, but I did pick up my Sharp NES 'Game TV' in the wild for $40 and I definitely prize that in my collection.

I'm only 14 at the moment, and started collecting a year or so ago so I don't have anything super neat. I do have some that are in demand/ sought after though

*Alfred Chicken (NES) (Good deal on it- 8 bucks at slackers. I see it go on Ebay all the time for around 20 dollars loose)
*Super Bonk (SNES)
*Battletoads/Double Dragon (SNES)
*Sparkster (SNES)
*Widget (NES)
*Bucky O Hare (NES)
*Old decals from closed game stores- including Raccoon Mario, Spring Wario, M&L SSS, Pikman, Starfox. I also have an old Funcoland cutout with their little bunny mascot. Needless to say, they all look good in my game room.

I'm hoping that as I get older- my mom won't give a shit about what I do with my extra cash. She goes ape shit when I start doling out 20 dollars for some of the classic Nintendo carts that are a bit more rare than my usual picks. She also hates that I look for the boxes and instructions as well- she thinks it's stupid when it's actually a good way to increase the value of my stuff. For whatever reason, I'm also considered "spoiled" just because I spend money on games. These days, I earn my keep and even pay my mom to drive me to different stores just so I can spend more there. I don't spend it all in one place, though- I often get various computer programs, books, video game oriented t-shirts and accessories, food and others with the money I get. I do a lot of babysitting for my little cousin (who's also addicted to video games- only other person in the family who even sits down and plays them XD) which racks in about 10 dollars a day (for about 5-8 hours), but it's not often. I try and get cool stuff- but the truth is that it's just me and my mom and although we don't do without anything we're very low on extra cash for my things.

If your mom has a credit card, she can open an Ebay or Amazon account and when you find good deals in the wild that you don't need, you can pick them up and resell them. It's a great way to build a collection if you don't have a ton of money.

We do that alot- but she hates using credit cards. She's a woman of about 50 years old- and of course is technologically impaired. She can't even send Email (copying and pasting crap) without my guidance. She also is afraid of extra bills piling up from the credit cards.

I've gotten some cool shit on Ebay with my money, stuff I'd never possibly find out here in St.Louis where there's no gamestores selling vintage stuff except for a Game Trader 10 miles away. That of course requires me to BEG to go, even when I pay mom and pay for my stuff.

My most prized game is Brigandine Grand Edition. It's a remake of Brigandine Legend of Forsena, released on the same system in fact. The game is somewhat rare but can be found, and as an example I'd mention that it's much rarer than Ys Book 1 and 2 that can be found easier but still limited quantities.

It's a great game and doesn't sell for as much as it should considering its rarity. Valkyrie Profile, Tactics Ogre, Suikoden 2, and even the original Brigandine are common and sell for more.

I like to play games just as much as I collect though, so if I didn't like the game then I wouldn't be listing it. Brigandine and Brigandine Grand Edition are two of my favorite games.

I've got all kinds of crazy stuff that're considered "collectibles", but one game that I was very thankful to get a hold of is Ys for PC-88. Even if I can't play it on real hardware right now, it's entertaining enough just to marvel at all the included materials with radically different artwork than would later be used (brown haired chubby Adol, different (evil) logo, etc). The MSX version looks similar, but I believe that the packaging/contents were streamlined a bit.

Growing up there were only two arcade games that I committed myself to someday owning: Black Tiger and Street Fighter II Champion Edition. As an early adult I managed to buy both locally as my first two arcade games/cabinets.

My FFII and FFIII US SNES carts. Compared to some of the rarities in this topic they're not much but I treasure them. What's funny is I don't even remember where I got II from, or when lol. It's just a blank. I got FFIII at a rinky dink pawn shop for $10. Just blind luck.

I've also got a 3DO but I don't suppose that should really count. I also have Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence with all the original packaging. I didn't think it was worth a ton until I checked on eBay one day.

Same with Ico. I bought it for $5 at Superstore when it was being cleared out. Original black label with the booklet, just a snapped case which I replaced. Smartest $5 I ever spent. If I had any clue this thing would become as sought after as it is, I would've bought every last one in the bin.

A pain I'm sure many gamers feel lol

My copy of Rescue Terra 1 for the 2600. Mainly because it was the strangest find ever. I found it outside, in the back of an old junk yard/ thrift store, underneath an old wooden bin full of snorkel gear. My buddy reached under the bin to pull out a snorkel fin and behold, out popped the Resuce Terra 1 cartridge. Since he was not a collector he just handed it over to me. They didnt even charge me for it. It now lives on my display shelf.

I have games that are rarer, and I have games that are more valuable, but my pick comes down to a tie: My complete, almost-like new copy of Crusader of Centy, and my complete copy of Ys Book I & II are very likely my two most-prized games that I currently own. I just absolutely adore both of them: fun, colorful, quintessentially old-school, easy to get into, and neither is over too soon. (Click the photo if you wanna see it bigger.)

Nice, both excellent treasures.

My most prized game - damn that's a tough call. I don't have anything worth HUNDREDS but that's not what constitutes a "prized game" I would say.

I'd probably have to say Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Lunar Silver Star Story Complete, and Skies of Arcadia for Dreamcast. None of those aren't worth TOO much, but they aint' cheap either. And not only that but I enjoy them highly. So much that I rarely play them on purpose so I do not tire of them.

WOW. Since I was a kid I wanted to get Shining Wisdom (I know not Shining Force) for the Saturn. Mainly because at the time it came out I was a huge SNES Zelda fan and the review said it was a clone. It got a crappy score, but I thought if it was like Zelda it would be good enough for me.

While it's not rare at all, I have a lot of affection for the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cart that came with my NES back in the 80's, if just because it was the first video game that was legitimately mine and mine alone, and I still have it to this day. (Along with the manual, at least.)

As for other things.. ...Hmm, I'm the sort that tends to have a lot of prizes that I'd never ever let go of, especially SNES RPGs, although extremely few of them have manuals even.

But a few notables..

Chrono Trigger and FF6: I've told the story before in another thread, about how I only got into these games a bit after they came out, so I had to get them used. By sheer luck they both showed up at a game shop at the same time soon after I started looking for them, and I traded in a few NES and SNES games to afford them(which I still regret, but I'm re-buying them still at least).

Tragically they only came with copy machine manuals, but both for being great games and the sacrifices I made to get them, I value these carts greatly.

Super Robot Wars: Original Generations 1 & 2(GBA), complete with everything. I lucked out and found both of them new at EB while looking for something else, and snapped them both up instantly. SRW stuff coming out overseas is pretty rare, and they didn't get a massive run.

Suikoden 2, complete. I got it as a birthday present from someone who didn't know much about video games back when it came out, and I hadn't even heard about the series at the time. I lucked out because not only did this game get really expensive later on, but if not for getting it I would have missed out on a really fine game series as well.

Hm... I have a lot of games, but few that have much value on their own. Though perhaps that isn't the best criteria.

I guess I'd have to go with sealed copies of Power Politics and The Doonesbury Election Game; two titles that my father developed in the early 90's. There's some sentimental value there, you know?

That's awesome, and I think it's exactly the sort of prized game a lot of us like to hear about. I suppose "prized" could mean "worth the most money" for some people (I believe there's already a thread for that in Classic Discussions), but I think a lot of people would be willing to let that valuable game go from their collection before letting go of a game they actually have some sort of attachment to -- maybe it was a gift from a dear friend or relative, something they just like to play often, or has an interesting story behind it.

Another game for me would be McDonald's Treasureland Adventure for Genesis. My best friend gave it to me for my birthday and while it's not my favorite game to play and it's certainly not worth much money, I had always wanted to add it to my collection and he gave it up from his own collection so I could have it. I'll always keep and enjoy it for that reason.

That criteria reminds me of why I was so intent on finding another copy of Blaster Master, after I sold my original one long ago(part of the bunch I sold for FF6 and CT).

One of my friends was obsessed with the game, and was going to get me a new copy to share the love, but then tragically ended up passing away before that time came. Now that I managed to snag a copy of it anyway, I highly value it because of him. I plan to find the proper Nintendo Power issue to help me with it, and do a full classic-style playthrough of it when I have some more time off. Just kind of a late send-off for a bud, I suppose.

This was came to mind for me and I unfortunately couldn't think of anything that fit the bill.

In fact, I'm trying to conjure up anything that might have a significant sentimental value and I'm drawing a blank. I'm sure there has to be something in my collection that would resonate something but it mildly amazes me that nothing comes to mind right away. Most of my collection is boxed up in the basement and I'd have to physically go through it all and do a little memory recall on what I grab.

I have something more sentimental vs. valuable than anyone's on the list. My CIB copy of Ms. Pac-Man for Sega Genesis. Why? Well my grandma's sister bought this for me when I was in 1st grade. It was my 3rd Genesis game (a pack-in copy of Sonic 1 and Taz-Mania being the first two).

Where it holds the most value is the fact that this was the only video game I had where I would come into the living room from somewhere else and find my grandma playing it. All the time, she probably used it just as much as I did. My grandma passed away a few years ago.

When I was in high school, I wanted a laptop really badly and sold off all of my cartridge based games pre-Nintendo 64 except for Game Gear (since nobody wanted it) to be able to afford it. I figured I could just emulate everything I sold. When I got a job at Safeway the fall after I graduated, my grandma died.

A few months later it was December and I decided since I was making money now, I would buy an Atari 2600 again and start collecting again. I started getting system after system and when it came time for me to get a new Genesis system, I went back to the privately owned game store where I had traded in most of my non-Nintendo stuff. He actually still had my same Game Boy Pocket with the protective leather cover that was sold exclusively at Target by Performance although he sold the box, and of course a few of my CIB Genesis games. Including my original copy of Ms. Pac-Man that my grandma played with me.

So now it sets on my shelf and won't be sold off again. It reminds me how she spent a lot of time with me as a kid, even giving the video games I played so much a try and enjoying one.

I'm kinda in the market for a Saturn now, and when I looked up Shining Wisdom I was shocked to see how much $ it was going for =(

Really? I got mine for about £12 off Amazon (PAL Version). Perhaps it's rarer in North America or I just got lucky. I'm more concerned about getting Holy Ark, which is going to cost around £30 - £40 or even worse Shining Force CD. Unless I get very lucky and find it in the wild, it's going to cost me around £100, if not more.

At least I have the much cheaper Japanese versions! :D

The sleeve says something awesome like: "From the makers of Xanadu and Romancia comes a new SUPER RPG! Can you solve the mystery of Ys?"

One of the many projects I have planned, for when I have enough free time, is to make a page with extensive photos, scans and videos of all my Ys goods.

Wow man! That looks like some treasure Indiana Jones would find! very awesome.

Woody Pop for the Sega Mark III (along with the Mark III system itself and the paddle controller).

Also I'd have to say my Commodore 64 5-1/4" floppy disk that contains Gyruss, Gorf, and Jungle Hunt. My dad had acquired that somewhere back in 1985 and I played the heck out of those games (some other games are on there too). He gave it to me a few years later. I still treasure it. A close second would be the (copied) disks I got with my C64 when I bought my own in 1988: Boulder Dash II, Radwarrior, Leaderboard Golf, a music disk, and a few others.

Hmm...interesting question. I don't have one particular "prized" game/system, but if I had a list, it'd be this:

Tengen Tetris: got this (loose, unfortunately) at a Goodwill for $2. Next to The New Tetris on N64, still the best version on cartridge IMO.

My original NES: I still have my toaster NES from 1988. It's had its pins replaced and the controllers had their innards replaced years ago so it continues to play wonderfully. I still have the gray light gun as well.

My uncle's 2600: Due to intertwining marriages, my wife and I have some of the same uncles and aunts (and yet we're not related). Growing up we'd play our uncle's Atari 2600 in their basement while the adults did their pow-wow upstairs. Over the years it went to one of our cousins who gave it to me as payment for fixing his computer.

Pac-Man puppet: Not a game or system but still something game-related I consider "prized". Won this when I was living in Las Vegas back around 1981-1983. Went to the upstairs area in Circus Circus and played one of those water gun target games. I won him (patterned after the arcade art sans feet, which fits over your hand and forearm) and a Ms. Pac-Man (which just fit over the hand). Lost the missus in the move back to Wisconsin.

Dragon Warrior IV for Famicom: got this from Queen of Felines back during the first (?) Secret Santa. I had never seen a complete Famicom game before and this totally knocked my socks off. I have it displayed on top of one of the Atari game holder "spires" of my "Ninten-Tower".

My most prized and sentimental item in my collection is my original Vectrex. I asked for this for Christmas of 82 and got it, which was a complete surprise. I got the Vec, an extra controller, and Armor Attack and that game was used for about 3 months straight! It was constantly on, and I'd come home from school or work to find my mom and stepdad playing Mine Storm on it! My stepdad passed away 6 years ago, but the memories of him sitting playing the Vectrex, since he was NOT a gamer by any stretch, still bring a smile to my face. He was pretty good too!

A close second is my copy of Electronic Fun magazine from June 1983 where I got my question to the editor answered about the Vectrex! The answer makes me look like an idiot, but in a previous issue they actually did mention a "Voice synthesis interface" which I thought would be like the Intellivision's add-on.

I respectfully disagree. The older "Holy Grail" topic that the newer one was merged with specifically asked about an item you had been searching for but didn't yet have (based on rarity or because you liked it), and the newer one asked about a game/item you already had and treasured, which could be interpreted in a more sentimental fashion (i.e. not worth much but worth a lot to you alone).

I agree that the newer one should be merged with an older one if a similar one exists, just not with the "Holy Grail" one.

I suppose it would have to be Earthbound CIB as that's my favorite console to collect for even though it's by far the most expensive of the Nintendo family. As for a Holy Grail of my collection I suppose either my loose Chrono Trigger or my complete Pocky & Rocky.

Not sure if this is appropriate to the thread, but my holy grail has long been Jurassic Park pinball. This is largely due to cost, partly due to lack of space for housing said item. Someday though, someday.

Videogame related, probably an Outrunners side-by-side arcade cabinet. Same deal as above except amplified, where the heck do I put this monstrosity??

Console related, definitely the pink Hello Kitty Dreamcast, CIB.

One of my long time Holy Grails of gaming has been the ASCii Stick Zero 3
This is one of the few optical joysticks produced for home consoles and the only optical joystick with rumble feature for Playstation.

After using the equivalent ASCii Stick FT on Dreamcast it has been unbearable to have had to go back to using clicky joysticks for PS and PS2.

I have searched for the ASCii Stick Zero 3 on eBay since around 2003 or 2004, it only came up for sale a couple times. The very first time was complete in box with the promo Street Fighter stickers and all original materials, however the metal base was corroded and the price was nearly $200 with shipping iirc.
I did not see another one listed for some years. In the interim I also posted want ads on a number of forums.

A couple years ago a seller (who currently has the same unsold stick at the same price on eBay) posted a loose ASCii Stick Zero 3. Tnhe pictures were out of focus, but something looked wrong with the graphic top-sheet. After messaging the seller, he admitted that the top sheet is peeling back from hand perspiration and that the joystick shaft is also corroded from sweat. He has relisted is a handful of times over the years and it remains unsold at $100.

Late this summer, I stumbled upon a seller offering both the ASCii Stick Zero 3 and also a programmable ASCii Stick (Pro ?)
I messaged him to inquire further about condition and functionality. Everything seemed good, so I purchased it for a little over $100 shipped.

This was it! I finally had it! The ultimate joystick for PS and PS2!!!
As a serious Rez player I had long ago purchased the Trance Vibrator, unfortunately it was pointless to play the game with a joystick that lacked vibration function. I own the only Hori stick which has vibration, but that stick is floppy and clicky and the buttons are poor. So I never played Rez on PS2 effectively (high scoring / pink butterfly ending).

First thing I do when the ASCII Stick Zero 3 arrives is dig out Rez and the Trancevibrator, hook up some headphones, get comfortable and ready to jam out. Bah!!!! What!!?! The friggin thing doesn't work!!!!

This is already long winded so lemme cut to the chase. The ASCii Stick Zero 3 does not function on almost all PS2 games!
I have never before nor since heard of any PS1 joystick not functioning on PS2, but this one, my Holy Grail, is not fully compatible with PS2 games!

Of course I contacted the seller and he says it worked on the games he played. What to do?! I tested it on probably 50 PS2 games and the only ones it works for were Shooting Love (Trizeal) and Metal Slug 6. Interestingly the controller does not work with Metal Slug 6 on the Complete Collection, only on the stand-alone JPN import release!
On all other PS2 games the joystick (in neutral position) sends a signal of up, and or diagonal up/left. The cursor on a menu just flips rapidly up, or if I manage to start a game the on screen response is stuck to the "Up" position. In Rez the cursor just gets stick in the upper left corner of the screen! ARRRGGHhh! :grrr:

I'd already done thorough research on this controller on the internet during the years I was trying to purchase one. I proceeded to spend even more hours looking for reports of this PS2 incompatibility - I have found none!

It pains me to look at it, knowing I'll never have a good PS2 joystick with rumble function to play Rez (until I build my own), but it is one of the only optical joysticks for the original Playstation, so I still put it to use with shmups and platformers on that system. Just sucks having to switch controllers when I pop in a PS2 game. :(

Without question, this is my holy grail- not just for SMS games, but for my entire collection. I've been looking for it for over 6 years now, and despite recently getting access to considerable resources that I would like to use to purchase it, no one seems willing to sell! Se la vie :)

Nintendo 64 DD with some games. Don't need the entire lot, but would definitely want to pick up F-Zero X Expansion pack and Sim City. Had considered buying one years ago, when prices weren't too bad, but never did. Now, the best prices I am seeing are definitely out of my price range. But oh well, maybe one day.

A Gradius arcade cab. I'm terrible at Gradius, but the games are so addictive, I love them.

I'd love to get this (http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=10674) too - Hebereke's Popoon is a great game and me and my friends absolutely love it and can play it for hours. It'd be great to try and put that in an actual cab.

Mine at this point are pretty much all arcade games. They are the big ones too that I would need a house to contain them.

The 2 I want really bad are Top Skater and a sit down Initial D. I have not played the versions of Initial D that were not on Naomi, but having a Naomi Initial D would be awesome, because as far as I know, I could start at v1 and work my way through just using the newer versions and security key things

I can never remember if I've posted in this thread before! Anyways...

If we're talking about no issues with space, money, ect I'd totally want to own a Aliens vs Predator cabinet. But even if I got one for free, I'd have no place to put it! I'd love to own a candy cab that could do MAME :D That would be awesome.

Besides that, I can't really think of anything. There's plenty of games I want to play that are expensive as hell (PDS, Snatcher, Various shooters), but nothing that's grail worthy.

Although I've always wanted to own Magical Chase, so I guess getting that would be a grail in its own :)

For me, since I'm going for a complete Genny collection, it comes down to knowing that at one point or another, I'm going to have to battle the notion of getting Miracle Piano Teaching System and Outback Joey mint CIB (including all hardware). Second to that would be the mallet 9 button pad for Wack a Critter. But honestly, these would be for the love of the art. If I were to put one single game up on a pedestal, it would have to be (for the time being) M.U.S.H.A. mint CIB or better.

I'm going to answer this one a few different ways...

If we're talking game collecting, I'd have to say an Adventurevision - complete in box - found at a garage sale. (Somehow the garage sale thing would make it feel much sweeter than just buying one - not that I could do that either!)

If we're talking something a little larger, there's a room I've built in my mind over the years that combines a lot of the different places I've spent a lot of time in (arcades, bars, pool halls, etc) - If I had the cash, that (relatively) large room would exist in the real world.

Finally, if we're talking abstract, my holy grail is to recapture that feeling of being a kid playing an arcade machine without a care in the world again. I've caught glimpses of it from time to time while playing on my cabinet, but it's an elusive feeling to say the least. (Even more so than that "in the zone" feeling where you're basically playing on instinct)

1. Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Saturn. I would LOVE to get my hands on a copy of this game complete, but i don't really think i'll spend the $600 that people want for it on eBay.
2. Super Robot Taisen (the original 1991 game) on the Game Boy. I absolutely love this game, i have the cartridge, but i can't find a complete version anywhere, in the US or Japan.
3. Magic Knight Rayearth for the Saturn. This was the very last licensed Saturn game released in the US. I have the Japanese version, but i wouldn't mind spending a bit to get the much more rare US version complete in box.
