View Full Version : Is anybody playing the Dolphin Emulator (Wii/GCN) ?

I've seen alot of the pictures of Wii and GameCube games running on the Dolphin emulator, and the pictures are just freaking ridiculous. Wind Waker looks so freaking gorgeous. Super Mario Galaxy looks absolutely stunning as well. This has me seriously considering building a gaming PC rig with this Dolphin emulator in mind. Obviously, I would also use it for playing various PC games, but the Dolphin would be a huge focus.

Just wondering if anybody here was actually playing games on this, and how is the experience? What kind of PC do you have? Any recommendations in building a rig specifically for this emulator?

Nobody here is trying this? Hmm. I mean, all the screenshots I've seen of various Wii and Cube games running at crazy high resolutions are amazing. It's basically Wii HD, before the Wii HD is available. There are of course big downsides to trying to get this emulator to work. You need a really powerful PC for it to run properly, and even then apparently some games just won't work right.

Hadn't noticed that so much progress had been made. Downloading now...

Exactly what kind of setup do you need to run something like this at normal speed?

It says at least 2GHZ, and the website lists some tested graphics cards...

The last time I read anything about DE, it was something about making a Homebrew Channel compatible update that would basically 'update' the Disc Channel to run from that emulator instead of the Wii's preloaded one.

Dolphin was the name of the GPU core alongside the IBM Broadway CPU in the GC, right? I recall reading (and not that long ago, I had no idea anything was close to playable...thanks for being worse than Zophar's not updated since 1998, emulator-zone!) that there was a project to emulate the core, not much else though.

If you wanna PC game, get a good graphics card, and a decent CPU.

If you want screaming performance in emulators, get a CPU that does single-threaded applications as fast as possible (as far as I know, Intel is still the single-threaded app king, with the Core iX series allowing one core to be highly clocked while others are lowered; apparently the i5 is better than this than the original i7 releases). The use of the GPU should be limited to some simple rendering, nothing a cheap video card can't handle, likely even at higher resolutions where only full-screen effects like anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering (which the GC doesn't implement IIRC, but the emulator might) will make a difference (unless the card is severely fill-rate limited...lol).

If it's like Project64, the result will be blurrier than the original (especially text and similar flat graphics) but with sharp edges between polygons.

Obviously you can have both, but currently that requires spending for both components. CPU + GPU.

Emulators playgames extremly badly compared to the consoles i fthink it's just not the same, and no motion controll using mouse and stuff is totaly agaiinst the point of the nintndo wii. GO buy consoles insted of looking for was to cheet around free games.

GOTTA LOVE THOUSE TINY GAME CUBE DISKS.

The Virtual Boy is the one console that I can't see Nintendo still making money on. They don't produce replacement parts anymore and there is really no way to effectively play the games unless it's on a Virtual Boy system (ie. Nintendo won't offer ports of these games on any of their other systems). Sure, it would still be illegal but I think Nintendo should feel grateful that somebody would feel enough passion for their failed system to actually make an emulator for it. Honestly, I would LOVE Nintendo to give the concept of a headset system another shot(this time with some actual virtual reality component). Maybe then they could make some cash off of re-releasing some of the Virtual Boy games under a "Classics" (for lack of a better term) line.

Gotta love those tiny Gamecube discs.

Rewritten so it's understandable.

Still makes little sense, though.

This. The Virtual Boy as a system was a failure, but the games for it were rather fun.

What the fuck.

His post are always like that.

He's 's either a non native English speaker and is very inconsiderate by not at least running his post through a word processor to try to minimize errors with it's assistance prior to posting it here.

Or he's just barely literate or just doesn't care enough to attempt to properly write something that resembles the English language.

I'm intrigued by this emulator and the amazing screenshots I've seen from it over the past year or so. Looking forward to seeing it continue to evolve and improve. Would love to be able to play through something like the Wind Waker on it eventually (That game especially seems to come out looking amazing with this emulator).

Didn't know some of them were trannies, considering most Gamecubes are covered with holes.

The 2 Ghz recommendation for Dolphin is really vague. Clock speed means a lot less now than it did 6 years ago. What kind (line, model) processor and video card would one need to play Dolphin at a decent speed?

I doubt it will run perfectly. PS2 Emulator was out for a while and my Quad Core machine still have problems with it. To run the GCN/Wii emulator, you need to find the plugin and bios. Finding those are pain in the ass.

From what I understand over at the official forums they recommend either an i5 750, or a i7 920, along with a GeForce 260 or better. Even then, performance quality is very sketchy.

This literally took me 5 seconds to find (+1 second to download). YMMV, matey.
