We needed a thread of recent purchases me thinks.

Today, I got two new figures. Dom from Gears of War 2 to go along with my Marcus and Baird. Now I need to locate a Cole figure. I'm not really a big fan of the locust toys in the set, so I'm passing on them. I also don't like NECA toys, but alas they make game figures....

I also got a Kaito Nendoroid. He's from a synthesizer application called Vocaloid. A link to the page, so you can see him with his different heads and whatnot. So cuuuute.

They seem to be getting along pretty well.

Found the following for $1 each at a local thrift store, all of them still in their original box.

1. A bunch of Starting Lineup baseball figures from the mid-to-late 1990's including Jim Edmonds, Nomar Garciaparra and Mark McGwire.

2. Some McFarlane NBA figures from the early 2000's including Steve Francis and Rasheed Wallace.

None of these are really worth anything, AFAIK, but being a big sports fan I do consider these kind of cool to have.

I bought this at Target a couple days ago. Pretty cool little figures called Mighty Muggs. My son decided this one was his though so I need to get another one. I checked the website and they have Marvel, Star Wars, and Transformers figures.

Mighty Muggs are Hasbro way of bringing designer toy to the mass market.

While I do like the platform, it looks too much like a cash grab...

I think the Mighty Mug series of toys are cute. I don't own any, but I'm not big on collecting toys that are not from games or animes. I've seen them in the store and always go "AWWWW" and I really like their box designs.

A friend gave me a Mario Kart 64 R/C car as a Christmas gift - Mario himself. You might remember seeing them at GameStop a while back (not to be confused with the Mario Kart DS cars they currently sell).

I *hopefully* have a X-Men Origins: Wolverine Deadpool coming in the next few days from Hasbrotoyshop after catching a 10 minute window when it was back in stock.

And i won an A-Wing over on /toy/ last night. Just need a Tycho figure for it.

I stopped by the thrift store yesterday to see what I might find.

I walked out with a few items, most of which I am (hopefully) having identified on another forum. Two 3 3/4" figures, two small vehicles/transports, a Riddler 3 3/4", a purple panther toy, a small anime statue from Burger King and a very interesting 6" figure. It's 100% pearl purple/magenta, and in the form of an anime type character. There is a "block" that sticks out of the back of the figure with two small buttons inside. If you push them the arms swing. Weird.

My sister gave me a Toys R Us gift certificate for Christmas and I picked up a Mighty Muggs Boba Fett and Stormtrooper. They look great on my desk ... however one day I came to work and my boss had moved them to where they were holding hands and informed me that they had got married while I was out to lunch.

Almost bought Halo covenant alien figure today for $1. Looked creepy and cool until I picked it up. Sticky, dusty, and had possibly old carpet on it. May have actually been a deformed Master Chief figure under the grime.

I've picked up quite a few toys over the last couple of months (some are video game based, some aren't). They include:

probably 15+ of the McFarlane Movie Maniacs figures (including two of the large playsets)
4 out of 5 of some ~6' Nintendo character figures (missing Toad but have Luigi, Mario, Yoshi, and DK)
a set of Mario vs. DK gapashon figures
several SHUMP ship gapashon figures

Transformers "Legends" class. Think 3" versions that still transform. The Cybertron serioes Optimus Prime was purchased at Dollar General for $3.50. The movie toys were bought at Big Lots for $6 per 2-pack.

Best ones are Brawl, Bonecrusher and Scorponok. Jazz is an outright piece of shit. The fake grille that's on the chest flips up to form the rear window of the car. Looks more like a car that's been wrecked into, though.

I don't buy toys, but I do play those crane machines that have stuffed animals inside. I've picked up a bunch of those recently. I used to work in the dead of night at my store where we had one. My co-workers and I used to save our quarters and practice and really empty that machine out. Nowadays I can usually get a couple plushies for a few bucks. It's a really weird skill to have.

I envy the people who manage to buy those things in the 2 seconds they're actually in stock prior to selling out. Me, I can't get He-Man or Skeletor and I'm not paying $30 scalper prices from other dealers.

Chris and Sheva NECA figures. I believe they are 7 inches tall.

http://spaceballsthewebsite.com/tune/Tales%20of/DSC02725.JPG

Then my Tales of the Abyss Petite Prop Plus figures came. There are 9 to collect, but 10 packaged per case, so I ended up with an extra regular Jade. I hate Jade. I wanted a double of Guy. Oh well, I can torture it.

Luke (Regular Luke, Short Hair Luke, and Spa Luke):

Since I never posted them, these are also semi-recent. I bought two boxes inorder to get all 13 figures. Each character has a variant weapon, except for Ion. So I have extras floating around. Gave thought to selling them on ebay, but just left them in the plastic and shoved them in the closet. Well except for Guy. There are four of him floating around various places in my room.

I find if you use the flash but take the picture far away and with zoom you can get a pretty good picture with minimal glare.

I think my choice of home lighting also messes with the camera. Seems that those long-life compant flourescent bulbs don't put out proper lighting for the camera.

This one came out slightly better

As for the flash, moving an object to the edge of frame helps, but here I'm dealing with 2 layers of shiny plastic in front of the toy. It's going to catch light regardless.

It's far from complete, but my daughter and I have rounded out a little more of our jointly owned Iron Man collection:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v255/pzcortez/ironmans-1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v255/pzcortez/ironmans2.jpg

Imo, there are too many repaints in this product line. Some of them are cool, like the Captain America armor, but most are pointless, like the "Torpedo" model fourth from the left in the top pic. Also not pictured, but we have it, is the "Hot Zone" armor, which is the same model and weapons as the "War Machine", just painted red and gold. Meh.

The only ones I'd still care to get (although they're still repaints) are the "Silver Centurion" Target exclusive and the "Battle Monger". Anybody gets a line on these cheap please drop me a PM.

Zero/Lelouch from Code Geass. I'm a huge fan of this anime.

I had this PVC figure on reserve for a long while. He showed up last week sometime, but I didn't really do much with him until tonight. He comes with two heads (Geass eye and normal), two sets of arms and a zero mask that keeps getting "misplaced".

Picked this bad boy up today at a thrift, for a measly $3.19. It's a Tomy electromechanical toy, Atomic Arcade Pinball. It's from 1979. My brother got one for Christmas that year, and took the thing apart to figure out how it worked. Too bad he didn't have the brains to put it back together. This one's battery compartment looked like a monkey exploded in it, so it might be a while before I can clean it up and test it out.

I'm sort of regretting something that I decided to pass on, because I probably won't find another one, ever. I came across a Shogun Warrior toy. It was a Gaiking figure, the jumbo sized one. But missing a hand and all it's accessories. I just couldn't pull the trigger and buy it, even though it was only $3 or so. It had seen better days, and I couldn't justify even more clutter that I won't do anything with. I still have my original Mazinger and my brother's Dragun figure, both of which were beaten to hell. I'm not sure if I need a third in there. Here's a page dedicated to it. http://www.wildtoys.com/shogun/ShogJumbo/gaiking.asp

Wow, I feel bad for you about that one. I sold a small "Poseidon" action figure in the box for $75 a while back. Those big figures bring a lot of money, and I'd expect one like Gaiking would still be worth a fair amount ($30-50 I think, maybe more) even if it did have that damage.

Okay, you broke me. I couldn't find anything in the thrifts locally so I headed north and hit the ones in Lewisville and The Colony. I ended up buying the Gaiking, along with a shrinkwrapped Revell Robotech Changers model and a Coleco Electronic Quarterback handheld, rounding out my toy finds for today. I've got pictures posted in the June Finds thread.

The price I gave you was sort of my rough estimate. Boxed and mint ones do bring a lot of money. One like yours, but with both fists, brought $48 on eBay. I'd expect yours to be worth around $25-30 if you're planning on selling it. I bet if you either wait on eBay or do some searching you may be able to find someone who has just a fist that you can buy to make your figure complete. Those figures are really hard to find. I've been doing garage sales for 5 years and I've only found 2 boxed small figures at goodwill.

Steve W
06-02-2009, 06:19 AM
I don't plan on selling it. I'm not an eBay kind of guy (or Craigslist, for that matter). I bought it just because it's something from my childhood that I won't come across very often, if ever.

Looking at related toys on some site, it occured to me that I had a couple smaller Shogun Warrior figures when I was a kid too. Along with the Colorforms set!

What I really want to find in a thrift, as far as toys go, would be a Big Trak (I already have one, but you can never have enough of 'em!) or a Star Fire. And on the distant end of stuff I'd love to find but is so unlikely that I'll end up the King of England first, an Androbot or a Heathkit Hero-1.

:hail:You're putting a smile on my face and killing me at the same time with this post.

The smile comes from Atomic Arcade Pinball - Got one of these in 1980 and played the heck out of it. It eventually went to that place to wherever your old toys go and you forget about them. Then a couple of years ago I found a second one - CIB no less, at a Savers for $5. It remains a fixture of my Room of Doom - some pinball to complement the video games.

I'd recommend thoroughly cleaning out the battery compartment, and the sooner the better. It's probably full of battery corrosives. The machine I found had a lot of corrosion on the metal battery contacts. Once they were cleaned up the pinball machine fired up good as new.

I've seen tabletop pinball machines of similar size as the Atomic Arcade for sale in places like Walgreens and as cheap as $15. But what sets the old Atomic Arcade apart is that it uses real working bumpers, as opposed to these newer knockoffs which only employ these passive little targets. It's just not the same thing.

Interestingly enough the Atomic Arcade pinball machines have been recently reproduced (http://www.jeff-z.com/pinball/toys/atomic/atomic.html), so they must have been more popular than you or I might have realized 30 years or so ago. Still, it's nice to have near original machines like this.

The killing is all about Gaiking - If you ever see another one like that, inexpensive, incomplete or otherwise fubar, buy it and send it to me. I'll quadruple your money.

Here's my sad Shogun Warrior tale . I got a brand new Gaiking for Christmas 1978 and this was followed up the next year with a Daimos. A couple more years go by and I still have a hold of them. Granted I don't play with them so much, but they were still dear to me.

One day then my aunt who was living with my family at the time coerced me via guilt manipulation into giving dear old Gaiking and Daimos to the two unruly sons - then aged 4 and 2 - of her then-best friend (stereotype white trash as ever there was), who didn't have a lot of money to get her two poor little boys any decent toys of their own and you're-too-big-for-toys anyway yada yada yada :violin: so I gave them up. About a month later I had occasion to be in the back seat of the car while my aunt went by her pal's house for one reason or another, and it was great sorrow I observed what was left of Gaiking and Daimos scattered or partially buried all across the yard of their house, as if they'd been defeated by Gojira himself. :shameful:.

Hold on, it gets worse. Years go by. It's 1995. I move to Albuquerque and become familiar with a local collectible shop which happens to have a Gaiking for sale - $100. Not unreasonable, given the age and conditon of the thing. But still too rich for me (newlywed) at the time. I have a kid in 1997. Gaiking is still there for $100. I have a second kid in 2000. Gaiking is still there for $100. I lose my job in 2003 and work part time until 2007. Despite all of this, Gaiking is still there for $100.

Now it's 2009 and despite the tanking economy I feel confident enough in my life and my career that I wonder if Gaiking is still there with that dusty $100 price tag he's been sporting since at least 1995. He is. Even better...the store is having a 25% off sale! I come back the very next day cash in hand and the 25% off signs are now at 40% because the owner is closing the business! I walk in to the store, after 28 years of patient waiting to avenge the unfair forfeiture of my original Gaiking...he's gone. :frustrated:

What about Daimos? Daimos was too rare to ever see him again at a decent price. I'd have been happy just to have another Gaiking.

Buy `em when you can. That's the moral of the story here.

At the thrift that I bought Gaiking at, they had a boxed pinball game that looked familiar... it had the same board layout and configuration, just a larger backboard/scoreboard. It was by some company I had never heard of, but there was no denying it - it was a clone of the Atomic Arcade Pinball. I probably should have bought that one too, but I've got enough clutter as it is. Hopefully the little brats at the thrift won't smash it to pieces before it can find a good home.

I've really started perusing the toy section of thrifts, looking for old toys from my youth. I started after going to a thrift where I've walked past their toy shelves a hundred times, but this time I came across a Donkey Kong Coleco tabletop. I'd always wanted these things when I was young, but never got one. Several months later I'm walking past the toys again, thinking about that Donkey Kong (which doesn't turn on, unfortunately) and wondering if I'd ever see another Coleco tabletop in a thrift again, and at that moment I spotted a Coleco Pac-Man! Since then, I've always checked out the toys, on the off-chance I'll find a little piece of gold. I've got loads of electronic handhelds, but no more Coleco tabletops.

I already mentioned it in the August Finds thread, but I found two more Shogun Warriors today, out at a Waco flea market. They were Dragun and Godzilla. The woman running the stand had to call her husband to ask how much they were. I didn't find out how much Dragun was, because when she told me that Godzilla was $140, I just blurted out "nevermind!" and walked away. If you want to get eBay money for something, then fucking sell it on eBay. Why try to sell something like that at a flea market where everyone's trying to get bargains rather than pay ridiculously inflated eBay prices?

Thanks for helping me with that. I was going to go to yojoe and ID every figure one by one.

Also, it may not be obvious but almost all of the figures have their cutout card thingies. They're all in one of the boxes.

Crankcase has that parrot. It's green and yellow, right?

i'de say if you were to sell that lot on ebay you'de get between $150-$250 if it is all properly organized and sorted.

the emblem is in decent shape, def better than what ive seen on the market. the mask is also in great shape. one thing i love to do is this...

get an electric toothbrush, put a lil bit of handsoap on the tips and clean the gi joes with it. the bush is soft enough that it won't do any damage to the figures. and for the vehicles clorox disinfecting wipes work wonders.

if you find a gun that looks like an AK-47 it goes to that cobra figure. also on that yojoe site there is a section for weapons called WHOBIT it lets you search by color of the weapon, which is very very helpful!

Its a female cleric from Disgaea. She's in the palm figure set from the first game. I think there were two sets. I bought two sets, so I assume that's all there are. The figures actually come with a plastic case, but they take up too much space, so they floating around on the desk. And ya they are about four inches. I got them from Rosenqueen's website.

The bunny thing is a pokemon called Plusle. It's a mini bobble head thing that I got out of a machine at some import store.

Just in case anyone cares to see what the messy desk looks like (as you can see this is a couple days old, cause the cleric and a few others moved slightly to make room for something else I stuck up there). The four figmas taking up claim to the top of my laptop, are newer so....

Today I picked up some electromechanical toys and a 'handheld', although it's pretty huge to be held in a kid's hand.

http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp222/StevePW/electromechanical.jpg

The Computer Baseball is by Epoch and imported from Japan, and it's essentially a kid's version of Pachinko. And I have no clue as to why they refer to it as 'computer' baseball. All the little pictures of baseball players have 'computer' written on their outfits. It's missing its base, so it won't stand up on its own, but that shouldn't be much of a problem.

The little 21 Blackjack game is by Waco, a company that seemed to be an early pioneer in electronic toys. This one seems to be a later game, it's copyright is 1981 if I'm understanding my Roman numerals correctly.

The pinball game is by Vtech, and I haven't the foggiest idea why it's so large when that LCD screen is so small. I wouldn't think the hardware would be that bulky.

I passed on a Tiger football handheld at that same store along with a Pocket Simon handheld, the early '80s model. I seem to find a whole lot of cool toys at this one thrift. I bought a Shogun Warrior there, along with a boxed Pair Match from Japan.

Here's the back of Computer Baseball, with its list of rules.

After they were delayed for about two months, I finally got my manufacturer's box of the Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope Trading Arts figures:

http://www.blister.jp/images-item-big/page-12285.jpg

And the irony is that I still haven't played the game, but given that I collect everything and anything related to tri-Ace games, I know I'd want them no matter what.

I'm a little disappointed to be honest, though. There are only 5 figures in the set, no bonus secret figure or anything, and the value doesn't seem so great. I've bought previous manufacturer's boxes of Trading Arts sets related to tri-Ace in the past, and for around the same amount of money, they had 10 figures in a box (this box has 6) and were larger. These figures are pretty minuscule and scrawny, and the painting isn't even as clean either. The faces look really sharp, but the clothing and equipment are painted pretty sloppy in spots.

So even though I really like them, I can't help but look at the tiny five figures (with a spare Meracle still in her box) and think "I paid $70 for this?" In comparison, I only spent $40 to get the two Play Arts action figures of Edge and Reimi, which are 2-3 times as tall, hefty, articulated, and painted very well. Sure, it's 2 versus 6 figures, but I think they balance out. $40 definitely would've better a more reasonable price for the Trading Arts.
