From every scrap of information I've been able to gather, ALL Arcade Edition and all of the Pro Editions packed with the Forza/Ultimate Alliance game have the re-designed board.

The problem is that MS is hush hush on this, so all gathered info is from actual users, which adds human error to the equation. On the other hand, no conflicting evidence as of yet. I'll be watching this thread as eagerly as you.

I've been wanting to ask the same thing but I was debating whether or not it was too soon. I would really like to get another 360 but I'm waiting until I hear the problem is fixed. The last one I had was dead out of the box. I sold the replacement (eb warranty) immediately. The final broken system was my 5th in 10 months.

As someone who stood by with doubts when people started reporting RRoD errors en masse, particularly because I owned several Playstation 2 consoles that all worked fine (sold and rebought the console a few times) when people were bitching left and right about disc read errors, I can assure you that the problem does exist and is not the result of poor maintenance or anything other than manufacturing issues. Mine just died in the middle of the Sega Rally Revo demo. It's actually the first console I've ever had that just plain shit the bed. Fortunately the 3-year RRoD service policy was in place when mine died.

I'm not saying I thought people were lying when they initially started reporting faulty worksmanship on the 360/ps2/etc., it had just never happened to me until the 360, which I had owned for about a year when it happened.

I am personally debating on whether or not to try the 360 again. I had some pretty bad experience with my past 360 en devours, with the red ring occurring for me multiple times on multiple units. Anybody who knows me also knows that I BABY my electronics, and I definitely did no wrong to the console...although it seemed to love to do wrong to me. The thing that kills me is that the games for the most part were fantastic....and I do miss them. But, I am not so sure I am willing to take an expensive chance again just yet. I'll wait some more I suppose until I feel confident enough that the problem(s) have been resolved.

this is really the only way to do this since they took the manufacture date off the outside of the boxes, well that and one other thing to go by.

check for 175W and check for Lot 740 and above and that can almost gaurentee a smaller core xbox.

i bought mine before x-mas and it was lot 744 so i am sure every one (unless they dont sell which incase the store sucks) should have burned through probally to about lot 748 now. i say that because i had herd about the smaller cores about a month before i got mine and it was already to lot 744

Got an Elite 2nd week in December. I didn't buy a store policy plan cuz I'm a gamblin' man, but I kind of figured by now I'd be in the clear since the problems were running rampant about a year ago.

However, in the box there were some fliers about an extended warranty you could buy for $60, but you had to buy it within like 30 days of purchasing the console. That kind of hacked me off. For one thing, I just paid about $600 to get this f-ing thing, now you want me to cough up another $60 to ensure I'll be able to keep playing it? Second of all, the machine should be reliable enough to not have to do this in the first place.

They're charging triple what Best Buy charges for an extended warranty. And, when your system croaks (which I'm hoping is no longer inevitable) and you're actually required to use this service, you can't just walk in to the store and get another one. You have to play the shipping/ups game. You'll probably be without a machine for 2 weeks and when they deliver you a new one, they'll either leave it sitting outside your place for someone to steal or send it to some fucking processing facility an hour away from your house that you must get to before 7pm on a Friday night. Screw that.

Just make sure the power input on the side of the box says "175w" It clearly states this in fine print on the box. If you find one that says this (almost all now do) then you have one with a new falcon chip.

Mine will be 2 years old in April, and it's still going strong. Considering how much I use it I'm surprised, really. Easily has more use on it in <2 years than both my Gamecube AND PS2 combined saw in the ~6 and ~5 years I've owned those, respectively.

As far as getting a Falcon, you should be pretty safe. Most places should be on lot 747 or so, and they became pretty commonplace around lot 740.

Send the dvd sticker back. I just sent mine in at first it wasn't bad I was like it is alright then it started to get worse to the point where even If I opened the tray via controller it would stick.

Got my 360 in early April 2007 and it still going strong 9 months later... not that that is anything to brag about; consoles should have a lifespan of at least 3-5 years. My 360 gets used heavily, and although I'll be gutted when it eventually dies, I'll just replace it with an Elite that will hopefully have the Falcon board.

Got my first 360 which was the Pro edition with the pack-ins I believe in August or September...can't remember. I did the flashlight trick on it and I could see the copper pipe so it definitely was the older model. Plus it would get hot as hell. I had it about 2 months before it displayed the rings. I took it back to Walmart to trade it in since it was less than 90 days. This time I checked the package and got the one with the lower wattage PSU. This new one runs noticeably quieter and much much cooler. Time will tell I guess.

I have the xbox 360 arcade system. It does have the 65Nm chip set. The way I found out was the manufacture date and the new heatsink set it has. also by the fact that its about 50% cooler. The best way is to look on the bottom of the system with a flash light and see if it has the copper heatsink or the new square silver heatsink. If it has the new heat sink it has the new chipset.

We bought ours in the middle of December. Gamestop assured us it was one of the new models. Well, had 10+ RRoD over the next three weeks! Never a pattern to it. Once it was on start-up, once while signing up for Live. My boy could play Rock Band for hours and never have it shut down.

Sometimes we could turn it right back on, sometimes we had to remove the power cord first, but it always started back up.

Finally checked the error code and it said it was a bad power supply! Filled out the online form for a repair, got my mailing box in the mail. I called MS and told them it looked like a bad supply. They didn't care, just send back the console only.

So now I'm waiting for a new console which will probably die as well since it's a bad power supply. MS didn't care. So another round of repairs coming up.....

Oh yeah, the USB door on the front had a broken/missing spring right out of the box!

Bought my 360 in late March 2007 and it has run beautifully. No issues at all really. (knock on wood) The only scare I have had was the damn ring of red lights that popped up once when the power supply came loose on the back. (I remember screaming "No dammit! Live!" As I frantically tore the cables off of it and reconnected everything)

Now as for a launch title. My friends fraternity, at Kent State, bought a launch console (I waited in line with my friend for it at Wal-Mart) and they play Madden, NBA Live, Halo, and Gears throughout most of the day. Their poor pro system has been subjected to someitmes near non-stop use since launch and the only problem comes from the trey that only opens and closes from the Xbox dashboard. Some people are just lucky.

For one thing I understand there's a chance the console may be damaged from the bad power supply. As long as it's under warranty I'm going to get it repaired/replaced until it's right.

Power supplies run around $60 (unless someone can point me in the direction of a cheaper alternative) and hard to find in my area. I might get one as a back-up but I'm still going to make MS live up to their end. Besides I've got the Wii, PS2 and original Xbox to keep me company.

I bought a Pro with the Ultimate Alliance/Forza 2 bundle. It's definitely not one of the newer models. It has HDMI though, and it was manufactured in July '07. I bought it, IIRC, in October.

I have it sitting horizontally. At first, I just had it sitting on the surface of my desk. I noticed it got pretty warm quickly. I then decided to prop it up for maximum air flow (about an inch or two off the desk). The bottom of the case BARELY gets warm now.

Of course, I use the 360 only moderately. On top of that, I bought the machine from Target and purchased the extended warranty (3 years on top of the manufacturer's warranty, IIRC). Oh yeah, MS stuck a new sticker over the original that's on the box...so I had to peel that off so I could look at the power information.

The first one knocked out all the electricity in my last apartment which was followed by a Red Ring of Death.

The newer one hasn't had any problems, and I am using the Intercooler with it and giving it plenty of room to cool off by setting it on top of a Rubbermaid tub with nothing else in front of or behind it. I also plug it into a power strip whenever I use it.

I don't play for longer than one hour in a sitting on any games, just because...

I don't think i can put this any more plainly. if you value your 360, you'll ditch the intercooler. The intercooler draws it's power straight from the 360's power supply, which then provides less voltage then required to the console.

ProgrammingAce, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to kill my 360, but overheating is what killed my first one. I'm not a techie, so what is the long or short-term consequence of the voltage problem by using the Intercooler?

It can't do any worse than a Red Ring of Death and shutting down all the electricity in my apartment, which is what happened with my original 360 just before it went to the Great Beyond.

Sadly, I think it's going to be Intercooler or nothing, in which case I'm wasting several good games and an expensive-@$$ game system, IMO.

And aren't all 360s ticking time-bombs? And no, I'm not a PS3 or Wii fanboy.

I don't think the whole intercooler thing is a great idea, but if you're going to use one, use the Pelican one. It draws power from the USB ports instead of drawing off the main.

Well, I'm not red-ringing, but I have an elite manufactured on October of '07. A couple of weeks ago, after playing some CD's, I put Bully in the drive and it freaked out. It made some awful noises. After that, I had lock-up issues for about a week. Mass Effect is the worsed offender. It seems to freeze every time I open the equipment menu and switch to Talia. Strange.

I've had mine 18 months (March 2007). I've had a RRoD come up because my HD wasn't properly attached (I think my kids might've fiddled with it) but that's it as far as the RRoD goes.

(Man did I panic when I saw it though! :) )

I've wondered if my laser was a little flaky, as I've had a few disc read errors in the past. Haven't seen any in awhile (touch wood), but I still think about it when a disc seems to be taking it's sweet time loading.

I found that too. No game seemed to present the disc read error more than Mass Effect. I actually swapped my first copy thinking it was the disc. Maybe it was that first pressing, as I still had issues with the second disc I tried (although far fewer).

Course, I think that means I missed the window for the redesigned machines, but this one seems to be doing ok.

My first Xbox was from early 2006 and it never died but began to have minor video output issues (a rolling line of purple) around Xmas 2007. Interestingly enough about the time I started playing Mass Effect and Conan it also started to have loading issues and would freeze intermittently during load screens. Never got an RROD on it though. I sent it back, got a new refurb and haven't had an issue since. I don't play mine heavily though.

Perkar's Halo 3 360 died this morning playing Soul Calibur IV. Not a RRoD, but from the sounds of it, started off as a GPU error that cascaded to a complete death.

As for cooling, one of my hardware buddies had a good idea, uses the idea, and has not had a problem with his 360 yet (he has had it for about 1 year).

He got one of those docking station laptop coolers and put his 360 horizontal on top of it. The laptop cooler has its own power source as well.

It wouldn't do any good. The whole reason the licensing system was changed to what it is was due to complaints about the old one. If this 360 dies I'm out of luck.

As much as I love the 360...if Microsoft can't make them so they don't die, they shouldn't be making them at all. Spending $500 on something that dies within a month of purchase sours me even after having such luck with my first.

Hmmm...interesting. I had two 360s back at launch. The original unit had what you term as a sticky tray and when I received the replacement second (new) unit, I sold it since it was at that time that 360s were reported as crapping out in large numbers. I'd really like to own another 360, since there are so many games that I'd really like to play. Maybe I'll try a new arcade unit. Funny enough, my launch PS3 has had not a single problem and THAT console was the one that we thought would perhaps die an untimely death.

A co-worker is on 360 number seven!!! He figures that if MS keeps swapping them, he'll keep playing them. The last one to die was a Halo unit.

Instead of taking it back to EB, send it to Microsoft. They automatically transfer your license over to the new system.

Sorry, but I'm going to disagree with you.

I did the DRM fix to a new 360. That 360 then proceded to have that 360 have an e74 (iirc) error. Sent for a new box and got the generic b.s. letter stating my licenses were transferred
So I tested that fact......downloaded the titles from the account management screen and tried to play them offline. Guess what, they were all in Trial mode. So I get to wait about 10 more months to "fix" the problem.

Also as long as there are "launch" systems out there, the RRoD will not go away. Granted the new ones seem to have other issues, not the RRoD.

I play it all the time

I have played it hours on end

I play DVDs, CDs, too

Not a single Red Ring or issue.

If it dies now, it has been a good run, and since It already has been like three years, I will just get an arcade with HD when it kicks the bucket

yup, stu's right, my halo edition 360 (purchased day of release 9/16/07) died a few days ago while playing soul calibur. it locked up at random (no biggie... it's an MS product, it's SUPPOSED to lock up here and there). turn off and back on... loads dashboard fine, i go to load game... and it locks up again. i turn off and let it sit for a bit. turn back on... splash screen beings to load and then the screen garbles... some vertical lines. turn off, wait longer, turn back on, and.... nothing. center power light turns on, system does not output any signal... i stare at a blue screen on my tv. controller also will not sync to unit. so, i bought a holiday 07 elite bundle later that day. my halo unit is still under warranty, so i've requested it's coffin. i sure hope they send me another halo unit.

My 'new' refurb's drive just shit the can. My original unit died xmas 07 when the disc drive went out, taking multiple discs with it. They replaced it with a new refurb unit, however it was never right. The disc would screech in the system quite often. Lately it had been spinning up and down for no real reason (even when I was on the dashboard), multiple crashes due to 'dirty' discs that were brand new ect. That one died for good last night. It didn't even last a year from its rebuild date, which was 12/25/07.

Today I had a customer return an Elite they had purchased a month ago because of our little friend, the RROD. He wanted an exchange, and since it was under warranty (90 days...should be 14 but oh well, administration doesn't know what the fuck it's doing) I get a new console and start with the exchange.

The guy wanted me to switch HDD's around because he had it full of his stuff. No problem: I take the new HDD and place it in the damaged unit and the one from the damaged unit in the new console. He then asks if it was possile to turn on the console just to make sure it turned on. So I connected it to a Viera that was behind us, and low and behold...on a NEW Xbox 360...

...RROD!

What the heck!? I was simply amazed. How can a NEW console already give the same problem? So I had to find another console, which thankfully WORKED and exchanged it once again.

I'm sorry, but to see that happen on a new console...even now I am still in shock.

With that being said, their game lineup this holiday is really good. I think when this whole hardware issue is over and done, MS will have been sued like 100 more times. I think this will definitely affect their fan base on the next console they make. I know that I wont probably be buying another launch system again.

I think it's already affected their fan base. I know of at least three people who would have bought a 360 if it hadn't been for the bad press about hardware reliability. These people have now or are now buying PS3's instead and I'm sure a lot of people are buying PS3s over 360's for the same reasons.

And I can see why. Comparing the consoles side by side (I own all three of this gens consoles), the PS3 feels like a much better quality machine. If I think of the games I've enjoyed this generation, a lot of them have been available on both the 360 and the PS3. So, what does it boil down to? Price? The 360 has all the "hidden" extras: pay extra for the wireless bridge adapter, pay for the (superior but not all that superior) online service, rechargable batteries... it all adds up. But despite this the 360 remains my console of choice because it has a better controller, a better achievements system and more exclusives that interest me.

Just wish they'd fix the hardware.

Well, it's happened to me as well now. My 360 was manufactured 7-21-07. I purchased it from Target on 10-19-07. The unit is one of the newer ones with the HDMI plug.

Was playing Fable 2 last night when suddenly it did exactly what Perkar's machine did. Locked up. Turned it off, then back on. Went to the dashboard and appeared to work alright....but no, it froze again.

Anyway, I made the call to MS for my system's coffin. Funny thing is, I babied the thing. Kept it well ventilated; even had a small fan blowing near it 24/7 to increase air circulation. Ah well.

Oh, and that Target Extended Service Plan I bought with it is useless. They just defer you to Microsoft and won't work with you. Fuckers.

And you have learned the first rule of store-bought warrantys: They are a sucker's bet and useless. Always (ALWAYS) keep your receipts, no matter how long you've had it. (I still have my receipts for my launch day PS2.) With that little piece of paper and enough bitching to the right folks, you can get some justice.

And if not, you go to the manufacturer - which you're apparently doing anyway.

My 360, a Pro system I've had since about April of '06, crapped out on me this weekend when I was trying to play Fallout 3. It had been locking up a lot the day before but I thought it was just the game. Sunday, however, it froze and when I turned it back on I had the dreaded red rings.

Did anyone else have a hard time getting MS to replace theirs? I called customer service and talked to this guy from India who had me run through a bunch of different tests to try out the system, trying it with and without a game and turning it on without the hard drive. We got red rings a few times but on the last test my XBOX didn't red ring, it just hung during the animation of that silver X ball. So he told me that they would not replace my Xbox because the warranty expired after a year. I told him that I thought they had expanded it for three years but he said that was just for the RROD, which I wasn't getting now.

I just stayed on the line and insisted to this fellow that I had gotten the RROD even if I wasn't getting it right then. He tried to argue that if I sent it in and they booted it up and didn't immediately see red lights they wouldn't fix it, but eventually he gave up and spent 5 minutes talking to a supervisor or something who must have told him to go ahead with setting up my repair, because he did.

They aren't sending me a "coffin" though. They are supposedly e-mailing me UPS labels I have to print out, although they said that Sunday and haven't done it yet. I have to provide my own box, too.

The same thing happened to me too. I had to front my own box and send it out (bye bye 15 bucks). Dangerboy's unit died a few days after mine did and he did his whole thing online, and they sent him a coffin. So If/when anything else happens to my next unit i'm only going to deal with them online. I had to go through the whole testing process as well, but my drive was dead and not a RRoD issue.

theyll only fix it if its a rrod. ive read accounts online where people had their 360 die on them, but not got the rrod, so they wrapped it in a towel while its powered on to get the desired effect.

whats funny about the whole system dying thing is how people will curse ms for making a defective console, then say oh well, it had a good run (a year or two) then go out and buy another one! its like rewarding a dog for pissing on the carpet.

same as people rebuying ps1 after ps1, or ps2 after ps2. i gave up on ps1, and will eventually buy my fourth ps2 after sony decides to drop the price to $99. really have no choice unless you want to sell the games or let them rot. but like a battered spouse, i keep coming back. btw, my 06 vintage 360 is still going strong :knocks on wood:
