Not hardware, not a peripheral, not memorabilia... a single video game, be it cartridge, cassette, CD, or DVD. What's yours?

Choplifter III for Snes.. Or so I gather..
It could be Blackjack for the NES

I don't have a guide yet that covers SNES and Genesis.

Kid Fenris

Hmm . . . For me, it's probably Radiant Silvergun, Keio Flying Squadron, or Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Is phantasy Star SMS a rare game for that system? I need my DP guide here yesterday! :( lol

christianscott27
08-15-2002, 10:48 AM
you could certainly call it a rare game, although its as much a matter it being highly sought after. you could argue that tengen tetris and chrono trigger are not truely rare also but the demand for them is so great that they become holy grails. in short, if you see a copy for cheap be sure to pick it up!

got a Phantasy Star complete last weekend for $5.00 along with a Shinobi, Outrun, and Alex Kidd in Techno something or other.. The guy who was selling them at the flee market thought they were genesis games. They were all in such great shape I didn't even argue the fact that they were SMS and just gave the guy $20.00

I guess by that logic I could throw in the 3 Chrono Triggers I own as being rare lol.

I'm going to guess and then Brian can correct me when he gets to the board.
Tengen Tetris Complete, Panzer Dragoon, Snatcher (is that right?).

I only pay close attention when the game looks fun to me, so I say
Final Fantasy 1 factory sealed :)

Mine would have to be PC Genjin 3 Taikenhan for the Core Grafx. It was made in very small quantities for Hudson Soft's annual games caravan. Hudson Soft regularly makes special versions and samples for the attending patrons. PC Genjin 3 Taikenhan is a sample of PC Genjin 3 (or Bonk 3). It's very rare, even in Japan. The image shows both PC Genjin 3 Taikenhan and PC Genjin 3. The PC Genjin 3 Taikenhan version is the one on the right.

It's hard to tell which of my game's rare but I think the award goes to my CIB Tutankham for the Intellivision. Unless you count label variations then I have Wario Land and Red Alarm demo for the VB along with a number of SNES demo label.

I once thought i found Stadium events for the NES at a thrift store, so i was EXTREMELY happy the ride home, and when i got home, i bolted up to my room to get the Tips and Tricks magazine with the Collectors Closet on Holy Grails, only to find i had purchased Athletic World. Damn.

I'm not sure...I don't really have 1 game that stands out. I do have a few rare ones. Like Alien Soldier for the Megadrive or Street fighter 2, phantasy star and virtua fighter for the sms. I have a bunch of rare games for the Saturn too... Of course all complete.

Either Pinball for Odyssey2 or Power Lords for Colecovision (both from CGE 2000), or my 2600 Galaxian lab loaner.

Among regular releases, hmm... either Quest for Quintana Roo (by Sunrise) or Tomarc the Barbarian for the 2600. I also have a complete Buster Douglas Boxing for SMS; not sure how that compares.

I'm not sure if I should include my 3 multi carts. 2 for the Famicom and 1 for the NES. The NES one has 1000 games on it. Some of the Hacks are pretty funny.

Hmm...by system (only ones worth mentioning)
2600:
Atari Video Cube
Pengo

SMS:
Phantasy Star (Again, a gudgement call here)

NES:
Bubble Bobble 2
Qix

Sega CD:
Lunar (With strategy guide)
Vay
(both probably more desreable than rare)

Saturn:
Panzer Dragoon Saga

PSX:
Klonoa
Final Fantasy Tactics (non-reissue)

DC:
Twinkle Star Sprites JPN (I have no idea what the rarty of this one is, but I think it's probably the rares game I own.)

ClubNinja
08-15-2002, 09:30 PM
Phantasy Star is definitely a judgement call. I'd say it falls under the "sort of rare, but highly desirable" category. In my SMS collection, I think that Aerial Assault, Ghouls N Ghosts, Psycho Fox, and Sonic are probably rarer than my Phantasy Star.

My Mega Man 7 and X3 for the SNES probably fall into that category too, although I know there's been some debate. My Tengen Tetris certainly does, though.

For certain rarities, I'd want to say Robot Killer for the Arcadia, which I thought might be one of it's more difficult finds (I need my guide!) Boxed NES Secret Scout is definitely a tough one. Qbert's Qubes for the 2600 (yay, finally!) is probably my rarest overall though...

Griking
08-15-2002, 09:40 PM
Probably my complete Swordquest Waterworld

08-15-2002, 09:49 PM
As Chocobo Kick pointed out before our rarest are probably

Factory sealed Final Fantasy 1 (NES)
Snatcher or both lunars (Sega Cd)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (have an extra gonna put up on ebay soon)
also have Klonoa and DBZ Final Bout for Playstation least till i sell the DBZ
Math Blaster and Pirates Gold complete for Genesis
SOS sealed for SNES also Harvest Moon complete and all the Mega Mans complete

not sure what the rarest one would be overall though.

I don't keep up with rarity. Anyone who can direct me to a guide regarding rarity of games for newer systems? (NES,Genesis, SNES, and newer?)

If I had to take a guess, based purely on what I've seen in the wild:

NES:
Magic of Scherezade
Final Fantasy

SNES:
Chrono Trigger (complete)
Final Fantasy 3 (complete)

Saturn:
Guardian Heroes (loose)
Metal Slug (complete)

Playstation:
Final Fantasy Tactics (not greatest hits, complete)

Man, that' s a tough one. Definitely a toss up between a few games:

Alien Soldier for the Mega Drive (PAL, mint complete)
Crazy Hospital for the PC Engine (factory sealed...it's for sale too!)
Shiawase USagi 2 for the PC Engine (factory sealed as well)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (bought it NEW when it came out!)
Legend of Xanadu 2 for PC Engine (factory sealed)
Sylphia for PC Engine
Ogre Battle for SNES, boxed complete
Warsong for Genesis (mint complete..new!)
Pirates Gold for Genesis Complete

Is Choplifter III for SNES rare? I sold one for $5 a while back! Guardian Heroes for Saturn isn't even remotely rare, I have 8 mint complete ones :) Lunar, Lunar 2, and Vay for Sega CD are also not rare, just highly sought, as Radiant Silvergun for Saturn, which is dirt common (it REALLY is!) but VERY sought after. Same thing goes for Castlevania X for the PC Engine. It's not rare at all, but everyone will pay an arm and a leg to get it! :)

Troy

It's one of the adult LaserActive games called "Dr Paolo no Totteoki Video", seriously, almost all of the adult LA games suck with the exception of Angel Mate (strip poker). Dr Paolo no Totteoki Video may be the worst adult LA game, it translates into "Dr Paolo's video of seeing through body", but this game simply sucks. It first asks you to film a few girls walking on the streets, you'll then be rewarded with some adult videos and footage based on the score you get from Dr Paolo, along with some really lame comments from him. The worst part is that the chicks in this game are ugly, which are real turnoffs. If you're looking for some attractive Jp girls with some game play, try only Angel Mate. I got all the games simply for the sake of completing my collection.

My rarest games would be :

Snow Brothers (Japanese Megadrive)
Megaman In Wily Wars (Japanese and Pal Megadrive versions)
Space Battleship Gomora (Japanese Megadrive) HES 4 in 1 multicart for Sega Master System (includes Power Block, Adventure Kid, Twin Mouse and Cave Dude).
Outrun 3D (Master System)
The Flash (Master System)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn Pal version)
Dungeons & Dragons Collection (Japanese Saturn)
Radiant Silvergun (Japanese Saturn)
Battle Garegga (Japanese Saturn)
Metal Slug (Japanese Saturn)
Snatcher (Pal Mega CD version)
Neo Turfmasters (Neo home cart English version)
Ninja Masters (Neo home cart English version)
Stakes Winner (Neo home cart English version)
Last Blade 2 (Neo home cart English version)
Metal Slug 2 (Neo home cart English version)
Art Of Fighting 3 (Neo home cart English version)

I put Snow Brothers at the top of the list because I think it's possibly the rarest .

Well, now that my Legend of Zelda NES test cartridge has left me  , the rarest thing out of that whole collection would have to be probably my copy of Little Samson, but I have other rares that I am not sure of. Other notables in my NES collection include Namco versions of Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, Pac-Mania, DK Jr. Math, Star Trek: TNG complete, etc. Then just a few SNES things really, Chrono Trigger with everything but Manual, Earthbound with everything out manual, etc. Say, is there a rarest system thread out there too, cause I have a Nintendo M82 12-slot store demo unit that's like my baby right now, heh.

Well I wind up selling most of my games that are worth much more than 50 bux so I dont have any real expensive rares.

I got a sealed EEk SNES which is supposedly rare but they arent much in demand price wise... Alot of obscure Genesis games like Rennovations titles that will probably be big medicine when Genesis collecting gets as popular as nes collecting and whatnot.

I kinda like how the Genesis isnt a main category for most collectors since Im able to get them more easily than about anything else but on the other hand want to see them gain the value they rightly deserve.......

Oh Sniderman sent me a 2600 pickup homebrew so I guess theres not really alot of those.

I may have to change my answer for my rarest PS1 game. Granted, Nichibutsu Arcade Classics (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit/nichi/) and Hyper Crazy Climber (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit/hcc/) seem to fetch insane prices on a fairly regular basis, but I just received today a game that took me four years of hunting to find, IREM Arcade Classics.

http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit/irem/box.jpg

Finally, I can play Zippy Race (a.k.a. Motorace USA) on my Playstation! :D

http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit/irem/game2.jpg

Best part about it? Due to some collective not-noticing-the-thing cloud that seemed to affect everyone on eBay except for me, I scored this puppy for its opening bid of twenty bucks. (To give you a clue, my max bid was...well, insane.) I've had it in my hot little hands for just over 16 hours now, and I'm very pleasantly surprised. It was, indeed, worth the wait.

I'll have a full write-up in my Retro Revivals (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit) section sometime by year's end. In the meantime, sleepy though I am, I've gotta race that motorcycle one more time.

What does that game usually fetch??? Ive had this game sitting on my shelf for years and it's still there ?

Thanks

Hi Tyler!, i´m Matías, a vg collector from Argentina and i am also the webmaster of the unique site dedicated to vg collectors in my country and also, the page contains information for all the systems. I found your site searching Master System (because this is my favourite system) and it´s cool.
Well, i want to know if you want to do a banner exchange, because your site is great and also, you help me to show my site around the world, because many times people thinks that here in Southamerica there are no collectors.
My site is called "Arqueología Digital", here it´s the url: http://arquedigi.8m.com
Well, that´s all, i´ll wait for your answer and i hope you accept
Best regards

SNES - I found a copy of Incatation today (which incidently is how I ended up here). I also have all the popular RPG's except for BoF 2 and Lufia 2. All are loose unfortunately.

NES - Not really sure, I don't own the book... :( . Dragor warrior 1-4, Tengen Pac-Man, plus many others of uncertain value. Again all are loose.

Genesis: PS 2-4, Gunstar Heros, Faery Tale Adventure, Sorcerer's Kingdom... (loose)

Saturn: (complete!) Magic Knight Rayearth, Panzer Dragoon 1-2, Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Wisdom

Those are the only systems I'm collecting for right now.

I have some that are in demand, and harder to find, but not really "rare" as in severely limited quantities. By rare, I assume something that you wouldn't normally find on a particular day of Ebay searching. Some things I have are "rare" because they are comlete and in demand such as Phantasy Star CIB, Secret of Mana CIB, Chrono Trigger CIB, etc., but they can be had for a price.

I have several carts that are "rare" as in you can't find them, but don't know which one should be considered the single rarest...it would all depend upon who you asked...

River Raid Prototype for Intellivision

Why did Atari release Video Cube *and* Rubik's Cube? They are the almost the same game, so why release them twice?

It was a licensing thing. Kind of like why did INTV release Soccer when NASL Soccer was the same game?

There has to be more it than this. Atari Video Cube and Rubik's Cube were released around the same time by the same company. NASL was released by Mattel Electronics whereas Soccer was released by INTV Corp. The licensing agreements that Mattel had probably didn't carry over when the company was sold.

Sonic for SNES? You bet... to bad it's a hack of Speedy Gonzales with Sonic and Mario taking the places of other sprites. Crap, really.

Sonmari is much better (I'd love to get it.) A true-blue Sonic game on the NES... the programmers obviously took a lot of time with that one.

Tekken 2 on the SNES appears to be an original game, but it blows. They have copied the arcade's select screens and some of the still screens, but the rest of the game is wretched. Bad graphics, bad control, laughable winning screen.

Why are people listing Gunstar Heroes for Genesis? Is it really that rare? I guess I wouldn't know, I've had it since it was released. At the time I felt it was being overlooked, but I had no problem getting it.

It irks me that FFIII, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana would be considered "rare", as they were popular and easy to get in the mid-90s. But seeing that people horde copies, I guess complete copies are hard to come by. Phantasy Star IV I can understand, released in 94 to little fanfare and a high price tag. Look on Ebay at any given time and there are dozens of auctions going on for these games. It's just that they are popular and demand is high. Complete copies for all 3 go for at least 60 bucks. Sheesh. 'Course, Chrono Trigger was 70 bucks new in 1995.

Anyway, I have small collections for SNES, Genesis, and NES.
NES: River City Ransom, maybe Double Dragon III, loose, but still easy to get

SNES: Clayfighter Tournament Edition w/manual--rare, to be sure, but low demand--I got it for $1.50
Super Double Dragon--seems to be rare, I paid $20 bucks, maybe over-priced, but I love it
R-Type III complete, great condition, with dust cover--I can't believe I paid almost $40, but it's beautiful \^_^/
Space Megaforce loose
Contra III complete--not too many of those around, it seems, or...?
I'm hesitant, but what the hell:
FFIII complete (poster included), guide in ratty condition
CT w/manual, no maps

Genesis:
Streets of Rage 3 complete--I've heard it's rare, I don't know
Lightening Force/TFIV--don't see it too often, in fact I didn't know it existed (probably because they stupidly didn't call it Thunder Force IV--WOW, that was stupid x_x ) but it's cheap, so maybe not rare, definitely low demand--I got it for $1.25!
Gaiares, I suppose, I've had it for years and years
Phantasy Star IV--cart only is cheap compared to with manual, even...keee-rist!!
Phantasy Star II complete with hint book--had it since 1991, its price then was $70...not as much demand for it now as PSIV complete, of course, but there you go. Not that I care, it's not going anywhere.
Ghostbusters complete in perfect condition--don't come across it too often like this. The GB fanboy in me is happy :)
Gauntlet IV complete--again, seems to be rare, but demand isn't exactly explosive--I recently got it for 4 bucks

IRRC, Rubick Cube was only available to Atari Club members(as a prize? My neighbour claimed so when we were young), and Video Cube was for general sale, making Rubic's Cube a collectors item. Tada!

Well, I just sold my two rarest games. Although I haven't posted them yet, so they're still in the house. Does that count? :D

They are:

Jewels of the Oracle (PAL Saturn)
Lords of Thunder (PAL Mega CD)

I've also got Panzer Dragoon Saga - but I don't think that is as rare. I certainly see it a lot more often .... I've also got a copy of Yu Yu Hakushu for the Megadrive on its way to me. That probably comes closer, but I've still seen it more often than the first two.

Taxi 2: Le Jeu for DC. It was only released in France. I had a hard time finding it in Paris, and trawled most of the game stores on two separate occassions. I now own two copies though.

mh a complete ss6 is not rare, it's on ebay often enough for about 30? and u can still order it online sometimes

mine is perhaps chavez ii, though not boxed, but i'm not really sure because i live in europe and the ratings in the guide don't fit the european market, eg that chavez ii would get a r9 at least over here, just think about it, R8 in usa, and it's an us realese, so woohoo it's really really hard to find in europe, if not impossible

Heh -- rare, but not necessarily desirable: My RCA Studio II, the monochrome wonder, with its original owner's manual and three boxed carts with instructions (Blackjack, Tennis and Baseball). It was my first video game experience back when I was about four or five, so I've still got it for sentimental reasons. :embarrassed:

As for cool things...hmmm...anyone know of a difference in rarity between the different editions of Gran Turismo 2? I bought mine the day it came out, so I'm pretty certain I've got 1.0 (with all the bugs included). However, I don't know any sure way of telling which is which, other than that some of the cars (like the Honda Logo) in my edition aren't even drivable and it works with all the GameShark codes (later editions apparently had software changes to make this tougher).

My brother's also got a Turbo Touch 360 controller for our old NES -- damn, that thing sucked to play with, but you sure don't see 'em around anymore either. And I have a Capcom Fighter GS controller for my Genesis, with a pistol-grip directional pad on the left side and a flat six-button panel on the right. Works great with SF2 Turbo!

Based on the DP lists, my rarest has to be my (loose) copy of SNES Chavez II, with a few PS1 games close behind it (Motor Toon GP, Punky Skunk, Speed Racer, Tail of the Sun).

Some of those might not be as rare in my area though, since I definitely remember seeing Chavez II somewhere else nearby (can't for the life of me remember where, though), and I've seen Motor Toon GP a couple of other times in the last month or so, and never more than $20.

Starwing Competition (SNES) (German)
its like the Starfox Super Weekend, but only a PAL German Version. And I know only this one copy from the game in german. There exist an english PAL version too, and this is too hard to find. The NTSC version is the easiest to find I think.

Taz (Atari 2600 VCS) Prototype (no Taz in the titlescreen)
its a Prototype, where the titlescreen is different to the release version. No Taz is there, only the copyright from Atari.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (Atari 2600 VCS) Prototype
ROM is a bit different, but nothing in the gameplay. But its one of my favourite game, and I am happy, that I own the Prototype too from this great game.

Other Atari 2600 VCS Prototypes:
Alpha Beam with Ernie
Centipede
Demons to Diamonds
Dolphin
Human Cannonball
Kung-Fu Master
Millipede
Obelix
Off your Rocker
Peter Penguin
Seaquest
Sorcerer's Apprentice

Genesis Prototypes:
Mickey's Ultimate Challenge
Micro Machines Turbo Tournament '96

And many Demos, Promos and Instore Games for many Systems.

Matty where did u get the competition cart from? is it THAT hard to find? i thought there were 100 or so made and i don't know many german collectors at all, where do u live again?
I have get it by an eBay auction, listed as Starwing Demo or Promo. I have see, that it must be something different, but not know at this time, that this Starfox Super Weekend Cartridge exist in german.
So I have ask the seller, if he would sell it earlier for a good price, and so he sell it to me and end the auction.

I don't know how much were made from it, but I have never see another german version from this game.
Maybe there were made 100 from them, but I think most of them are owned from Nintendo or were maybe destroyed after the Competition was over. Not know at all. Only a guess.

Its the only german version, which I know from.
And I now only one other guy who own a english PAL version. So at least 2 PAL versions, which I know. And only 1 german version.

When someone own this game in German, so please reply here, but I think there are not so much, or maybe noone else. :D

Wow... that's really cool! I've made a few games for the VB, all using the public compilers... nothing too cool yet, although better games are coming soon. It's really cool finally making use of the VB's link cable... it's sad that it died off so quickly :( . BTW, you don't happen to know how to set up the official Intsys VB dev kit do you? I've tried 3 different scsi cards, a few different computers, and tons of other stuff, but I can't get the software to recognize that it's hooked up (the scsi card detects it though).

As for Saturn emus... http://www.zophar.net/saturn.html is the biggest list I know of, but it doesn't sound like any of them are very good at emulating it... is there a reason why you couldn't burn the game to a cd-r and install a mod chip in your system to play?

Oh... and I guess since I don't have my website in my sig, I run a VB site, mostly modifying/programming... it's http://projectvb.vze.com .

dude, you actually OWN What's Shenmue? wow, I've been looking for that one for a long time.... Do you have any idea (besides Ebay) where I may be able to get a copy of What's Shenmue?[/quote]

Yes, I own one. I actually had a few not too long ago, but sold them all. I'm down to my last one, and am keeping it. :(

If you want a sneak preview, go to my site. I subtitled a video from the disc, and put it in the bonus section. It rocks. :)

My rarest item would have to be a Brazilian 208 in one built-in clone atari system that has a game on it not previously known to exist.

Other than that, I have a bunch of 9s and 10s for the 2600 and some rare oddities for the 5200.

I have a complete and never opend, still in its original packaging.
Nintendo Entertainment system with gun. Sealed in 1983.

I came across it at a resale shop with zelda (unopened).

It is the prize of my collection.

Anyone know what it might be worth?

Not sure what it's worth, probably a couple of hundred, but I'm pretty sure that the US NES wasn't introduced until after 1983.

Sealed? And Chad's right, NES wasn't in the US until 1985, the gun set you have might even be 1986 or so.

A very nice find though!!

Don't know how rare they are, but the ones that I paid the most for on Ebay:

NES: The Adventures of Gilligan's Island ($40 complete)

JAGUAR: Atari Karts ($80 sealed)

SMS: Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck (Australian release, $30 complete)

Plus I have built a collection of about 40 ATARI 7800 games, all complete (some sealed).

4 prototype NES games: Shockwave, Pyramid, Venice Beach Volleyball, and Stakk'm (sort of unreleased, it was on the Maxi 15, but my prototype is a standalone version.) Now if only I wasn't poor and could get a licensed prototype... :hmm:

rarest game, as in lowest # produced?
isn't Bazooka Blitzkrieg for the SNES rare as hell? but absolutely no one cares? cause i have a complete one in excellent shape.

i see alot of games being listed here that aren't really all that rare. but i guess it's all relative. cause i have shit like Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes, Dragon Force, Gunstar Heroes, blah blah blah, and while most of it is worth alot or sought after, they're really not all that rare. i mean, go do a search on ebay for radiant silvergun or dragon force, and see how many turn up, and do the same for bazooka blitzkrieg.

now, i'm not saying that my 1 really rare (i think) game makes me better or anything. i'm not saying that at all. and i'm not saying that radiant silvergun isn't the rarest game in your collection, or that you can't be pround of it. just that rarity is diffrent than what most people think. and this is a question of straight rarity, is it not?

A few months ago, after a period of not finding any new 2600 games in the wild (not counting dealers or the internet), I found the Smurfs KidVid game with the 3 cassettes for $4. No box, docs, or KidVid controller (believe me, I looked). So if that's more rare than a boxed no docs Meteorites, I need to change mine.
